CCS and NACS

We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

    Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Apparently the new Nissan leaf will come with both ports (NACS, CCS). Please consider doing the same for scout!
It’s not as good as it sounds. They don’t have CCS, they have j1772 which is ac only, and the NACS port only supports DC charging. It’ll probably end up confusing a lot of users, especially if they try to use a Tesla destination charger. NACS is the way to go going forward, and there are several good adapters to use CCS or J1772, so I don’t think we need an extra port that will gradually become obsolete.
 
Yeah, so what’s the Laserdisc of charging? What’s for people who were early adopters of the Criterion collection?

Oh don’t get me started. We early adopted all that electronic stuff.
Laserdisc, Minidisk, DAT, HDDVD. We even had one of the first wide screen tube TVs that somehow the orientation of the picture was affected by electromagnetic fields or something and it would be just slightly off kilter and it had an a and a b switch you had to change to try and get the picture straight. 😹

Someone else chose Laserdisc?!?! 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻 My parents were masters of choosing technologies that were not adopted, politicians that did not get elected, products that got discontinued, etc. I do slightly better. I am fond of falling in love with foods that get discontinued. RIP Just Mayo, Forever In Our Hearts. I know it’s still around, but only in tiny jars and it only seems to be at Whole Foods. Eff Whole Foods.

Also, Scouts will have charging ports. Now it’s on topic.

Huh, that tracks! A couple of European electrics, similarly few Americans, and a number of Asian cars who will possibly be last to drop the standard? 🤔
Yup, and it was in some ways technically ahead of its time (supported v2x) but was clunky and not too pretty.

Aside from more and more chargers moving to NACS by the time Scout is released, I'm sure the cost of having two charging ports with different charging options if passed onto us as the buyer would be more than if we just bought CCS adapters if needed. I don't think many people will by 2027 and beyond anyways.

I agree. It’s one thing to have to charge ports so you can back in or pull head in but to have two that are different connections seems like overkill. Only takes a few seconds (I presume) to click on an adapter.

No, please don't. It's a terrible idea. NACS is the one port to rule them all. Every vehicle should be NACS, it's the most elegant connector and solves for both AC and DC charging. No need to introduce complexity and confusion by having two different ports.

What Scout should do is put the NACS port on the passenger side front fender like the LEAF has, that's the correct location for it.
 
I wouldn’t be opposed to NAC and CCS1 since they’re both the same communications protocol, and wouldn’t be much of an EE engineering challenge, but it’s really unnecessary and would add unnecessary expense to the vehicle. An adapter is cheaper.

I agree that the plugs should be on the front right of the vehicle. It makes zero sense to put the ports on the back of a tow-capable vehicle.

Yes. I have adapters for J1772, CCS, and for a whole host of RV post and dryer plugs, lol. The trick is to not leave your adapter attached to the charger.😉

Can’t block a parking lot with a trailer, lol. There’s going to be a lot of circumstances where trailer will need to be dropped to charge. Very few pull through chargers around.
 
A port on the back would guarantee the need to drop the trailer unless the charging station was pull-through or pull along. A port on the front means dropping is far less likely to be required. I know this from 60k miles of EV experience, not theory.

This charging station along a route I regularly travel is very friendly to me when I tow but would require dropping the trailer if the port was put on the wrong end of the truck.

A buddy recently borrowed my truck and utility trailer. They charged at this Circle K charger without dropping the trailer or blocking traffic. Because the charge port is in the front where civilized ports are placed. These aren't isolated experiences, just ones I happened to photograph.

Pull through charging slots make sense in cross country/interstate locations but 99% of customers will not have a trailer. Optimizing for 1% is not frugal.

Tesla Superchargers are bar none the gold standard like it or not. Scout is following their lead which is the logical thing to do. Wiring cost on the rear driver side is logically less with a shorter run. No frunk to route around. Copper is no longer inexpensive.
