R2 Launch Watch

My son really likes the look of the R3X. Says it looks like some rally car I have never heard of. Anyway, he has never driven an EV and wants to test drive a Rivian because he isn’t sure about not having button or CarPlay. It’s impossible to get a test drive of even the R1s right now.

I just don’t think it’s going to be that much later. I’m just thinking positive thoughts that we will get our BEVs sooner than we anticipate.

Every time I have a thought about getting a EREV my Wrangler brings me back to reality. Took her in for a rear turn signal bulb.

She still keeps having that issue where sometimes she doesn’t want to start and I told them what I have to do to work around it. I have to pump the gas a few times and then she does. They now agree it’s probably the fuel pump. They are going to call the warranty company as it should be covered. So just $100 deductible and thank goodness because apparently the fuel pump is in the gas tank??? And depending on which pump she needs they arw on back order. BEV ALL THE WAY!!

I just checked again and still no truck test drives but a bunch of R2 test drives opened up for tomorrow. So we are driving one at 1. We will see what he thinks.

The Lancia Delta Hatchback?
I used to want one of those so badly.

Make an appointment to drive the Mustang right before or after the R2. I’m super curious about his and your impressions of the differences. We still have a reservation for the R2; I hate the UX, but my partner is less picky. We will probably wait until the pricing and options of the Traveler are announced before we make a decision.

Whenever I start getting discouraged about the plan to deliver the EREV first, I remind myself that Jamie told us that the same assembly line can be used for both the EREV and BEV. So those of us with BEV orders will not have to wait for additional factory work. We just need to wait for the early reservation holders that actually place EREV orders. I am expecting that orders will be non-refundable and a lot more than $100, which I am sure will cut the early order numbers down significantly. Look at the numbers for Rivian's R1T and R1S - they only had a reservation-to-order conversion rate of ~15%. If we apply that to Scout's reservation numbers, the BEV delivery schedule doesn't look so bad.

Rivian disclosed & published reservation-to-order conversion numbers? I have not seen ANY of that data in any reports or filings, ever actually.

Scout is already a year(s) behind on production. They need to get up and running as fast and cleanly as possible. Adding more supply chains, processes, etc. for BEV throws in a variable they can't afford until production is ramped and running smoothly. Especially when over 80% are PHEV...it's not like we're looking at 50/50 mix, even if reservation holders flake out the market has spoken.

Current deliveries are now set for mid 2028 right? That means 2028 will be focused on PHEV, no reason to potentially bug things up during that first critical year. I could see BEV coming in 2029 however I don't want to be a guinea pig on an early car, I'm mentally setting myself up for a 2030 MY delivery. That is assuming priorities/other vehicles/etc. don't get in the way first.

They haven’t said mid-2028. I haven’t seen that anywhere. They are still saying production starts in 2027 with deliveries to customers in 2028. To me that sounds like what Rivian just did. First vehicles go to employees end of 2027 then customers following soon after.

We are all just trying to look in a crystal ball and read the tea leaves. My crystal ball and tea are much more positive than some.

They're saying customer deliveries in 2028, I added the word "mid" which I believe is pragmatic not sensationalist. Even if they can pull off a miracle and deliver in Q1, which I doubt, rest of my expectations still stand.

I like that thinking for getting my BEV but a 15% conversion is not good for SM growth. Hoping for more like 40% but the production blend will be critical. Why wait 4-6 months for your BEV when -by then you’ll be able to quickly get hold of an R2. I think assembly needs to be 4 days EREV and one day BEV that way the BEV buyers don’t walk

I imagine the assembly from the EREV is more complex (but do to intentional engineering not significantly so)…it actually makes more sense after a few weeks of erev assembly to move to 1:5 bev to erev. Same assembly line just the Bev skips a station or two. So it may take 20 hours of touch time for the BEV and 24+ for the erev. Same line, same process just skipping a station or two is how I imagine it. No retooling or changes between shifts if a Bev vs erev is coming down the line.
