Charging while driving…Wild, irresponsible speculation...

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
So just had my first official Buc-cees experience between Austin and College Station so somewhere not that far from Tesla. There were 12 of the typical Tesla chargers then 6 of whatever their new chargers are that don’t have the red insets-are those the 400 volt series chargers? Needless to say 28 chargers. Ironically nobody was charging.

The newer chargers are “version 4” and can provide up to 500 VDC and a maximum of 250 kVA (kW) per plug.

The Scouts will charge faster on the Electrify America 350 kW chargers than any Version 3 (with the red inset) Supercharger because the V3 SC maximum voltage is 500 VDC, while the EA 350 kW charger’s maximum voltage is 1000 volts.

This means the vehicle won't have to step up the voltage to meet its 800 V battery architecture.

Yes but what did you get to eat and how many hats, shirts, snacks did you buy?

There’s a group of engineers who are claiming to have hacked the Lightning’s CANBUS to enable charging while driving. They claim to be testing it with portable generators (no, thanks, not at all interested). They suggest they will be releasing a plug-in solution for sale. I don’t know if I can believe them, but if what they say is true, I might buy it and add a few tens of kWh battery pack to the truck or trailer for when we’re going on long boondocking/trailering trips.

So you get a Terra EV that goes ~350 miles on a charge and toss a generator in the back and , voila an EREV. ;)

After so long driving only EVs, you couldn’t pay me enough to listen to the drone of an ICE engine—and especially not a gas/diesel generator—while driving or camping.
Yes. Every time the grid goes down around here, and it happens more that most would like. I step out of my nicely air-condition home running on an alternate power source (Solar) to the sounds of dueling portable generators. Don't miss that at all. :ROFLMAO:

Isn't the charging port of the Ford F150 Lightening just in front of the driver's door? Where are they going to plug into that can charge the truck while driving? Adding another charging port in the bed of the truck (the only place I can see having a generator) doesn't seem like a "plug-in" solution. Unless they will somehow feed power in via the outlets in the bed (which seems very unsafe)?

Yes, there are many, many issues of safety with what they’re doing. And their claims are also dubious.

They claim to be charging by running a J1772 charge plug to the charge port on the front driver’s side of the vehicle. I have assumed they’ve been gaffer taping the cord along the windshield frame over the roof and to the bed of the truck. But like I said, a lot of what they’re claiming is likely too dangerous to even consider at this point and it’s incredibly dubious that they’ve achieved what they claim.
