BMW iX3 and iX5 range

Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. The new BMW iX3 has 500 miles of range on a 109 KW battery and the iX5 has 475 miles of range on a 140KW battery. I’m certainly hoping Scout is looking at advancements in battery chemistry and cylindrical cell design given the delay. I’m not expecting the same range given differences in aero but 375-400 miles of pure BEV range should be the target.

Key word is Aero along with weight. Think about the weight that comes along with this robust suspension which is beyond other’s weights. I will argue and say the iX5 is also smaller, not by much but less material weight. But hey-maybe Scout will surprise us and tell us range is 400-ish. I don’t expect that nor do I need it but if it moves a ton of buyers back to BEV I’m all for it

Also remember that the expected battery size of the BEV is 120-130 kWh. So everything stated by others above is true (Scout is heavier and less aerodynamic) while also having a smaller battery. I would love for them to hit 400 miles, but I've read enough posts around here to be somewhat skeptical of the targeted 350.

I'm fairly confident that in order for Scout to deliver 350 miles of range, the battery pack size will need to increase from those early "estimates" to something in the 150-175 kWh. Unless something drastically changes with efficiency (or technology, which is highly unlikely at this stage given current production timelines), I don't see a battery that is 120-130 kWh being capable of pushing a Scout along for 350 miles. US EPA MPGe requirements for testing are also stringent (https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-Q/part-600/subpart-B/section-600.116-12)
But this has already been discussed, and we don't have the final production specs for the battery yet, so we'll need to see what we end up with of course.

I am curious about Scout's initial battery size estimates being low though, and how Scout would achieve 350 miles (simply based on the efficiency of current US BEV trucks and SUV's), PLUS the fact that these will be extremely off-road capable trucks.

If we do the math and use the R1T as the basis for efficiency testing and added a 120 or 130 sized battery, we would see the following

At 120 kWh: 350 ÷ 120 = 2.92 mi/kWh
At 130 kWh: 350 ÷ 130 = 2.69 mi/kWh

So the truck would need to run 2.7-2.9 mi/kWh to hit 350 miles on the estimated pack size.

But full-sized EV trucks & SUV's actually achieve a much lower number. My R1T's real-world efficiency is ~1.8-2.0 mi/kWh. A 120-130 kWh pack Scout hitting 350 miles would require roughly 35-45% better efficiency than the R1T currently delivers today, so I think the battery size will be increased for production.

I have asked in the past for the configurator to have measurements that change based on the options pick. So ideally there would be a picture of our Scout on the screen and not only would it change color but the options we select would be shown and there would be measurements, for example it’s this long with and without the tire carrier, the rails make it this tall, this wheel and tire combo make the height this.

In addition to that as we are adding options it would be great if there were a range number that would go up and down depending on options.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong but the battery range on the EREV will be affected by these things as well. So currently it’s estimated at 150, wouldn’t it go down just like the BEV would if you add 35s and a tire carrier and a rack, etc?

Yes, with the EREV (just like in the BEV, a regular-old hybrid, or any gas vehicle), anything you modify that will increase drag or weight and decrease efficiency, will reduce range.
 
I'm just hoping Scout leans into their German parent company a bit on real-world highway ratings. BMW, Porsche and Mercedes seem to have much better real-world highway results in relation to their EPA ratings than most everyone else. I don't know if those OEMs are designing their vehicles for the real-world while others are designing their vehicles to ace the EPA test, but I'd definitely prefer the real-world mindset, otherwise you disappoint all of your customers.

There are also efficiencies BMW is getting with a unified electrical architecture as well as new form cylindrical batteries that have higher energy density all of which scout should be incorporating to prevent immediate obsolescence.

Who defines when it’s obsolete? Nobody else is building a truck/SUV this robust and capable so guess it comes down to whether you are buying a typical SUV with lots of range or you are buying a vehicle with some history. Not to mention-BMW doesn’t offer a truck. But again everyone has varying use cases. And if 400 + miles is a need then to your point-for you the vehicle will be obsolete on day one

I just hope everyone gets what they want. And if they want a vehicle that’s gets 400+ miles of range and that’s what they need then great, it just may not be a Scout at that point. We just have to have patience while we are waiting for specs. I have faith in Scout.

I'm guessing (given the timeline) that Scout will be incorporating as many things to drive efficiency as possible. We just don't have any production details or specs yet, but I get your point around utilizing the most effective sub-systems to drive efficiency (so long as they are well-tested & hardened of course). There's no indication that Scout won't do this. There is an indication that Scout will be able to leverage the learnings of others that have gone before.

Based on my post above about battery size, Scout will have no choice, BUT to incorporate the very best architecture, BMS, cell & pack designs, etc.... In the example above I used the R1T as the basis for the analysis. I don't see how the Scout will be as efficient as the R1T from a CD perspective, so this adds to the importance of all of this.

Since we still don't have production specs, we'll need to wait and see how it goes.

It could be a Scout! But it would have to be a Scout with a MAX PACK battery, so not straight out of the gate (based on what we have seen to date), and not at a $60K starting price point. Rivian dropped the Max Pack post-launch in year 2 of production as one reference point.

It could be a Scout! But it would have to be a Scout with a MAX PACK battery, so not straight out of the gate (based on what we have seen to date), and not at a $60K starting price point. Rivian dropped the Max Pack post-launch in year 2 of production as one reference point.
Thanks for adding to my comment. Yes it is entirely possible they have different range offerings like so many others due. We are back to faith and patience.
