J, yes, I’m just a bit tired of folks saying how much mpg the engine gets. I knew it’s a 4-cyl., but it’s specifically meant for charging, not driving. If folks are really hell-bent on pushing the vehicles to that limit, buy an ice truck. Sorry, not sorry
Realistically it's an important metric though. If the point of the Harvester is to be able to go farther, then people would still need to/like to know how efficient it is, and MPG makes the most sense, regardless of it charging the battery or being directly connected to the driveline. Either way, a certain amount of fuel is going to be able to power the truck a certain distance.
 
I prefer "modular power source", but ultimately, whether the engine powers the wheels directly or runs a generator charging a battery, the result is the same in the eyes of the average driver. How many miles are you going on a gallon of fuel?

Edit: Yes, I know that the engine won't power the wheels directly...

Yes, and SM has already done the math that a full tank will charge the batteries enough to give you a 500mi range (in addition to the 150mi range they initially have). I may not have said that correctly. . . .

I do wonder how rough that math was... "It'll be close enough, we can enlarge the tank after testing if it falls short" :ROFLMAO:

Most people don't plan. Bird goes over there, I go over there. People pull into their driveway and barley get to the house door, not wanting to grab a cord. Wife husband or kid forgot to plug in.. When they park at work it's like a desert of barron wasteland of car obstacles. The gas is the hero to get out of the city.. the gas station down the block. Electricity bill is already skyhigh because of Bitcoin and data centers. It's probably easier to just pump the gas get a bag of potato chips and an extra large soda because it's 100°f out and crank up the AC on the way home. Wife parked in the cord length area or grandma so again you don't charge. Just park on the street you can just drive off in the morning without behaving to backup
Sadly the temps are 100 degrees and rising because of gas and excessive fossil fuel burning-but I digress

The system is being designed for the battery to handle surges while the generator handles a constant load. They might have a complete over ride option - if the driver KNOWS that they can get home on battery only. But realistically, the harvester will probably kick in at 50% or slightly less (depending on setting). You can virtually always add more gas - but charging will have less options and take longer. You NEVER want to be in a situation where your battery is 0% dead - the vehicle will be in limp mode. Even a high MPG vehicle does not get 24mph when you have to hit the gas.

Jamie had mentioned that we'd be able to pretty much drain the battery completely, but you wouldn't be able to drive anywhere afterwards while you waited on the Harvester to recharge to whatever predetermined level.
 
I expect there to be an EV only mode - but I also would not be surprised if it requires turning on each time you get in the vehicle. I kind of suspect a default mode (with the goal of discharging the battery to 10% or so roughly when the tank gets to reserves), with override options of max range (early use of the Harvester, so if you need to go over 500 miles you will still have battery charge left when you need fuel) and EV only.

So, after the 150 electric battery is drained that gives you 60 mpg equivalent, the harvest 4 cylinder generator can only charge at a 24 mpg rate? So basically we'll be getting 24 mpg....

This doesn't sound that epic
Maybe I look at this differently, but my truck gets 14mpg on a great day, and the wife’s truck gets 19mpg on a good day. 24mpg kind of sounds epic to me!

Ouch. I forget how little mileage SUVs get. Here I am annoyed that my route to work for the past year and big hill don’t let me get above 44 mpg on the Accord. Older job the commute was a bit longer and this time of year and through summer I’d be seeing 48-52 mpg. But an SUV is a bit more enjoyable than my Accord 😀

Same I’m 13ish most of the time.
You guys are making me feel good about the usual 15mpg in my Toyota!! It gets the same in the rain or dry, winter or summer, on-road or off-road, AC on or off. I think the only times it varies from that 15mpg is when there's more than a foot of snow on the ground, or when I'm running 80mph+ on the highway without traffic to draft off of. The aerodynamics of a living room is less than ideal at higher speeds.

I get ~22 on my Flex which isn’t too bad considering how big it is and how I drive 🤣

Also I’m less than 1000 miles from 300k on it - everyone keep their fingers crossed for it! Gotta make it to the release date!
