Operating Temps

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I understand that cold temps affect battery performance pretty significantly, but what is the absolute lowest temperature that Scout vehicles would be rated for?

2 winters ago I had 5 straight days of -40°F, with much longer extended periods of 0 or near/below.

And trust me, my gasoline vehicles had a hard time starting up, but they did and got me where I needed to go when I needed to get there.

Depends a lot on battery chemistry. I think modern NMC cells are rated down to -20C/-4F with no loss in operating capacity, whereas LFP cells at those same temps would be operating at only around 60% capacity.

At -40C/-40F there would definitely be some capacity impact even for NMC. Not certain how much, though.

I also now find myself wondering whether there could be some clever waste heat scavenging from the gas generator in the Harvester variants that could be used to condition the battery pack to help out in this regard. ?

Nearly all EVs have battery conditioning to maintain correct temperature of the batteries. You lose range in cold (or heat) because the conditioning system is taking power from the car's battery to heat (or cool) the battery pack.

Yes, I'm aware of that. The Harvester (and the Ramcharger) offer the potential for something extra in that regard specifically when the pack temps need to be raised, though, with the ICE waste heat from the generator. Just curious if that potential advantage is feasible to be leveraged by Scout.

Anything is feasible. We will start diving deeper into the technology as more details become available.

That's an interesting idea. The Harvester, could be more than just a range extender to ease the EV range anxiety. It could be some kind cold weather remote start. (Potentially)
