R2 Launch Watch

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
It all depends on what you mean by "superior."

Some would consider a solid rear axle to be superior to independent rear suspension. Some would argue the opposite. They're both right, depending on the use case.

Some would argue that a locking diff is superior to the computerized magic Rivian uses. Others would argue the opposite. Again, it depends on the use.

The shorter wheelbase of the Rivians will have some adamant that it makes them better. Others will say that's wrong. Depending on use, they're both right.

Physical, tactile interfaces are both beloved and derided depending on the observer.

They both are (will be) fantastic feats of engineering. The question of superior is dependent on what the driver will do with the vehicle.
That’s well put. Thanks for the reminders :)

So I’ve decided to cancel my R2 Reservation. Didn’t really make sense to keep plus the Scout is more to my liking. Also I will say this, when I was at the event I was wearing the Scout backpack and the employees thought I worked for Scout which I found quite hilarious.

There’s so much Scout gear out there now it’s honestly hard to tell who works there and who doesn’t. They need shirts with something in giant letters on the back. Not just employee. Something else.

I can totally see that. It was very funny given I was wearing a Miami Rivian Space shirt and the backpack. They were super confused

I had mentioned in another thread, I am waiting on the Lidar R2 in hopefully early 2027. I still am very very excited about the Scout but I realize it’s mostly because of the look of the vechical. Honest question do people have opinions on what aspects of Scouts Engineering is going to be superior to let’s say Rivian? Yes I understand EREV takes a lot of effort but there are other companies already doing that. Reason I am asking this question is for me the main thing Scout has over Rivian is branding and the look of the vehicle.
The main thing that attracts me to Scout is their commitment to having real buttons for the repetitive stuff but not going full Porsche. The lack of physical controls is why I am leaving Tesla after 16 years. I think Rivian has hewn too close to Tesla in this regard. I also think the Rivian front end is literally the ugliest thing that I have ever seen. It looks like a demented catfish. Every time I see one I recoil. I could never own one. On the other hand, my 15-year old son thinks they are the coolest so to each their own.

Scout is also saying all of the right things when it comes to self-repair. EVs need almost no maintenance but things can and do go wrong and I would like to be able to diagnose, order parts, and fix things myself without buying diagnostic and shop manual subscriptions. I'm open to a one-time nominal fee for the tool and shop manuals but not a subscription.

The only offroading I do is my gravel driveway so the Scout is probably overkill for me in that regard.

I don't care about self-driving. I wish I could change my Tesla from Adaptive to regular dumb cruise control.

On the EREV front, the only other one that I am aware of is the Ram. Everyone else is going to normal hybrid route with a small battery. So we will see if there is a market for a hybrid vehicle with a 150-mile electric range vs the more traditional 20-miles or less.

Okay now who is placing their order and is it just temporary until your Scout is available or are you going to delay your Scout because you bought an R2?
Relevant question since I have reservations for both R2 and Scout. Next car up to be replaced is our leased ID.4 which ends in February. Right now the main contenders are EV9 or R2. Wife loves EV9 which we test drove recently, hasn't seen R2 so can't comment. EV9 provides better value, dealer network, and known reliability vs R2 which is cooler but somewhat of a question mark on all 3 of those points so TBD.

If we get an EV9 then chances of getting Scout drops due to redundancy since we wouldn't need two big road trip vehicles. If we get the R2 or something similar then it's still solid. The biggest risk factor to my Scout reservation is the fact I'm only putting 6K a year on my current daily driver so paying $60-70K for a car that's used so little seems a bit wasteful. That plus the long and/or increasing Scout timelines for a BEV Traveler and I'm so-so at the moment.
