Spare Tire, Backpack, or Bald?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

With the introduction of the Backpack a few weeks (months?) back, has anyone else started thinking about how they'll want to manage the back-end? I'm not planning on off-roading - I was drawn to the Traveler's aesthetics - but I feel like it might look incomplete without something back there. I don't know if that's an introduction bias (if that's even a thing)? Or will needing to deal with the carrier every time you want to get into the back be a PITA?

Of course the upcoming configurator will help, but is anyone else is working through that choice already?

Spare tire. Loved it at the reveal and my garage has room. I’m anxious that we will hopefully see one sooner or later without the carrier just to know but when tire carrier is open I don’t love all the black plastic on the rear. As for the PITA, that’s what the frunk is for

Same. It has to have the tire carrier. My son kept telling me before reveal it won’t have one and when I saw it did I ran to my computer to make my reservation.

Before posting I was trying to find a pic of the back - on the Traveler page (the "Bring your world with you." section) it opens & closes so fast I couldn't get a good look. Though I did see, that I hadn't noticed before, the back splits when open so there's like a mini tailgate which I think is cool.

So then I went through @cyure's pics from Chicago to try and see, but I didn't notice one with the back closed & the carrier open. Need to go back through the Nationals thread now. lol

I was going to say, it should be in the Nats thread. 😹. Let me know if you can’t find it.

Just un case, here you go. I also measured the tire carrier too.

I'd rather not carry around the spare tire for daily driving. Will reduce efficiency due to weight and it'd gotta be a drag on airflow. The backpack would definitely be more useful for daily use, even for putting groceries, bags or sports equipment. If/when I got off-roading, I'll just stick the spare inside in the back.

I see what you mean about the plastic back - I have to imagine they'll have something designed for carrier-less gates. Maybe the tail lights will bleed into the back & you can have a smaller black area that mimics the carrier so you're not having 2 completely different back ends? I don't know - I've never designed a car before. Ha!

I’m curious to see what it looks like without it, but I really want one.

So, forgive me for asking, but since the hatch covers the full height of the opening, does the little tailgate serve a purpose?
I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know for certain. In my experience, that kind of fiddly extra step is something that I always look for ways to remove. I’m afraid the first generation won’t allow it to be removed, but I’d bet the second generation doesn’t have it.

Three major steps to get into the back of the SUV?
Imagine trying to do that with a kid on your hip, a bag of groceries in your hand, or a couple of excited dogs trying to get in.
No, thanks. If possible, I’d remove the spare tire carrier and remove the internal gate. One gate is all that’s needed.

This is an interesting discussion indeed. When the Traveler first came out I was in awe with the design and the look of the spare tire on the back. But then they put out the back pack and I was like oh that could be really useful too.

So that got me thinking, why not have both? I mean sure you will sacrifice some cargo area but it would be awesome to have an area in the back cargo where you can have the box inside because there will be a frunk for storage too, so in reality you could have both couldn't you?

Lastly, one concern I do have about having either is like what was mentioned above about how much area is needed to swing up the carrier to access the liftgate. Sure this will be more than fine in most cases when camping but making a Costco run could get a little challenging if not parked in the right location. I've seen a similar issue already with the Hummer EV SUV which has a massive tailgate.
