Spare Tire, Backpack, or Bald?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

The spare tire definitely looks the best, no doubt. But for practical purposes, I want it bare. For starters, using the auto-tailgate open is very handy very frequently. And on top of that, even when I'm not using the auto-tailgate button, I still don't want to have to swing it open anytime I'm trying to get in there to put the dog, kid's stuff, groceries, etc. back there. When the majority of the benefit is just aesthetics anyway, I'll pass. Sure is pretty, though...

I’ve never had a frunk and I keep thinking for market runs and mall runs etc I’ll use the frunk. The back I keep thinking would be for luggage for road trips. I’m 100% in on the tire carrier, but also having a Wrangler for 13 years now I’m used to it. It would be weird not to have one.

I think my dog will be mad at me if I try to put her in the frunk

Spare Tire! Driving in STL I have already had to change out a popped tire twice in 4 years, and that is 10x more often then I would like to be driving around with a space saver on fast highways. Also with the frunk I will already have a solid sized cargo space that is "Quick Access".

I would probably order with the spare tire carrier and then remove it, install the tire underneath where it belongs, and run bare most of the time. When I did have the carrier on, it would likely carry the backpack instead of the tire. I don’t like that much weight hanging off the vehicle that far aft of and above the rear axle. If I were going onto some of my favorite trails where tires can get destroyed, I would consider putting a second spare on the tire carrier.

Okay now this is a question. If you order the backpack would the spare be mounted underneath so then you have options. Depending on the cost of the backpack I might do that. Hmmm

Great question. I have no idea what they’re planning. I would bet it would be wrapped in plastic and sitting in the back seat when you picked up the vehicle and the tire would be on the carrier at the back of the vehicle.

Tire carrier looks great and I absolutely do not want or need it. I want it slick on the back and easy to get it open. Has it been asked anywhere if kick-to-open or hands free opening is available? I use that feature all the time with the BMW.

The only concern with that is what if the tire carrier is closed and you try to open it that way. I would think it would need to be disabled if the tire carrier is still latched.

This is an interesting discussion indeed. When the Traveler first came out I was in awe with the design and the look of the spare tire on the back. But then they put out the back pack and I was like oh that could be really useful too.

So that got me thinking, why not have both? I mean sure you will sacrifice some cargo area but it would be awesome to have an area in the back cargo where you can have the box inside because there will be a frunk for storage too, so in reality you could have both couldn't you?

Lastly, one concern I do have about having either is like what was mentioned above about how much area is needed to swing up the carrier to access the liftgate. Sure this will be more than fine in most cases when camping but making a Costco run could get a little challenging if not parked in the right location. I've seen a similar issue already with the Hummer EV SUV which has a massive tailgate.
Unless you are doing the month long Costco run the frunk has a surprising amount of space and would allow most if not all items to be stored especially if the lid is popped and you utilize the lower container area as well

Wait, do we know if there is underneath storage like the Silverado/Lightning? If so that would be awesome. Heck even the Rivian method of putting it in the bed/cargo area would be fine.

I agree that it looks better with the tire carrier, I do not think I will get it. I like to be able to open the back with the remote as I am approaching and/or when my arms are full. I also like that it wouldn't take up as much space in the garage.

Our nearest Costco is 3.5-4 hours round trip driving. When we do a Costco run, we take the Lightning. We bring a portable freezer and sometimes a second portable fridge, and if we have a big list of refrigerated products, we also bring a cooler or two. We fill the bed with goods and sometimes the back seat. We generally don’t put Costco stuff in the frunk.

I also wonder if the Backpack would/could be a cooler? Or if Scout partners with another company who can create a cooler based on the specs. An official Yeti or Stanley Scout Backpack Cooler.

So many decisions to make when the time finally arrives! Hahaha

I already know my wallet is going to be in trouble when I get to the accessories page.

I thought I saw a CAD sketch of a cooler / fridge in the backpack location. I think it was on this forum somewhere. I'm not sure if it'll come to fruition.
