Off topic - small trailer for a 2018 4Runner

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Hi All! My daughter has a 2018 SR5 4Runner and is looking to buy a small trailer. Uses would be weekend camping. Longest probably 4 to 5 days. Big enough for 2 adults and a 5 year old. She doesn’t want to spend a lot and is fine buying used. No tent trailers. I told her I know just the group to ask! What suggestions do you all have? Thanks!!

A 2018 4Runner has a towing capacity of no more than 5000 pounds with a braked trailer. I generally don’t tow more than 75%-80% of the tow capacity because I like the vehicle to stop when I tell it to stop and I don’t like to overtax the tow vehicle. That gives about 3500-4000 pounds of safe towing capacity.

For a “small” trailer, I have to ask which dimension is she hoping to have be small. A low height trailer is easier to tow. But you said no tent trailer, so you’re not going to find many ~4000 pound trailers that are easy to tow that don’t have some portion of a pop-up or otherwise adjustable space. Except a teardrop that’s always low profile, and that’s miserable to use with two adults and a kid for more than a night or two.

My recommendation is to look at the Taxa Cricket. I know it doesn’t meet every criteria, but the popup aspect is minimal and the functionality is excellent.

Thanks! I sent her a copy of your message. If I get any more questions from here I’ll ask.

She could also look around for camping trailer rental options. In our area there are several companies that own various campers that you can rent for a few nights to tow to your favorite campsite. That might let her figure out what kind of trailer she would prefer.

We cycle through tent camping, pop-up camping, hybrid hard-sided pop-out tent camping, hard-sided travel trailer camping, and then back to tent camping. We’ve never found a perfect fit for us. We’re still experimenting.
Right now they are tent camping but last night it was colder than expected and misty so woke up to everything damp. She’s ready for a trailer.

Taxa Cricket is a nice recommendation. Very good specs.
