Hey all, seeing the R2 pricing yesterday got me thinking. They are charging a $4000 difference between the launch edition and the premium edition.

I hadn’t even really considered how much more I would be willing to pay for something like that.

What do you all think?

It also kinda depends upon what they include - but I think I can save 10% over MSRP by then...

Quick question, do you have to pay for the Launch Green paint or is it included?
Launch Green is back

Inspired by the anti-rust coat every Rivian gets on the line, Launch Green is available for purchase with Launch Package for a limited time.

Its very hard to put a number on something without really having a true understanding of the "value" and features included as part of a Scout Launch Edition. Seeing what is included in the packaging is super important to assigning a number. The interesting thing about Rivian's Launch Editions, is that they have seemingly had a high value exchange. Its also notable that the extra value seems to be priced at a discount for earlier reservation holders - jumping in and essentially serving as test pilots and taking on what could be considered more risk, with less infrastructure to service vehicles as the company scaled. The risk reward equation for owning a Launch vehicle is real when it comes to service, support, bugs and working out any potential (and expected) kinks with early builds.

My mom (in her 80's) asked me the other day what the life expectancy of my truck was, and I told her that nobody really knows, since I own the first model year from 2022, and that it was Rivian's first truck. Scout will be in a similar position, and I would expect that we would see a strong correlation between high value and favorable Launch pricing.

The launch edition appears to be a no-charge option for the Performance edition. The Performance is $4k above the Premium, but that's buying you a lot of mechanical hardware as well. For free, I'd take it, IF I wanted the Performance edition, even if I only want the tow package out of the launch upgrades.

I think this is a pretty big value add. the Performance is a much more powerful vehicle, but by getting the launch you're also getting Autonomy+ ($2.5k value) and the tow package (I don't know if they put a price on that but I'd assume it was also $2k)
Exactly. I'd happily take it for free, same way I'd happily take a free launch edition winch from Scout (hint, hint). I have no interest in the Autonomy, but I wouldn't turn it down.

Given the pricing of the R2, we would buy the Performance Trim if we could get the limited time offer of the Launch Package included. That would get us the semi-active suspension, slightly better power, and the tow package for $4k.

If we couldn’t get the tow package included with the Performance Trim, then we would have to analyze the cost trade-off between the Premium and the Performance. I don’t care about torque or HP ratings—Those are numbers that people glom onto but that don’t make a difference in 99.9999% of my driving. I don’t need 3.6 second 0-60; again, that’s something that doesn’t matter for the vast majority of my driving. The yellow accent is even less important to me. I wouldn’t enable the Autonomy software. I don’t think I could care less about a special key fob. I mean, I want a fob, but if it stays in my purse 95% of the time so I couldn’t care less what it looks like. I do think I would want the additional drive modes, but I’d have to research them before I decided they were worth paying extra for.

So, to sum up…for $4k, these are the things I would maybe think were worth buying:
  • Semi-active suspension
  • Tow package (if it comes as part of the Trim)
  • Maybe the extra drive modes, but I don’t know enough about them yet to commit.
