Do You Want Your Scout To Have A Hands-Free Driving System?

I do NOT want my Scout to drive itself.

Part of owning a hands-on vehicle would be the satisfaction of tactile power over your destiny while enjoying the ride.

If I wanted a robo-car then I could buy a future Rivian.

Starting to rethink my position on this one. A hands-free where I still need to keep a finger on the wheel and eyes watching would be ok with me I think. Pretty sure I would only use it on divided highways.
Same boat, I’ve used GMs super cruise before in a borrowed vehicle and loved it (mostly) but at the end of the day I still love driving, however for me I drive it more than 100 miles a day usually closer to 200+ once on a long stretch of bland highway the ability to relax a little and let some of the wrist and elbow strain dissipate is very nice, but I don’t see it hands free as “self driving” it’s just an assist and was always ready to take over

Perfect scenario (in my mind for LII driving) is when you finally hit the NJ Turnpike after driving South for 4+ hours and its a straight shot to Delaware with ABSOLUTELY ZERO joy of driving. Slap that sucker into Driver+ and REEEEeeeelax.
 
One thing I would like to know if it hasn’t been covered already, is if self driving works in situations like heavy rain, fog, and snow.

We have discussed this a little in the past, but think about your sensors & cameras as being like eyes and sending information back to your brain. Without those eyes, you have less information to work with. The above disclaimer is what I get with Driver+ and if a the system gets blocked because of snow, I get an alert (happened to me yesterday driving in the snow). My front end got gummed-up and the truck told me to clear the sensor. Either way, you would NOT want to use Driver+ when the weather turns crappy. Even if it is working, I always take control in bad WX.

This is how my truck "sees"
  • Radar: The Launch Edition R1T/R1S has 5 radar sensors (4 corner, 1 forward) for monitoring traffic, lane changes, and rear cross-traffic.
  • Cameras: It includes 10 exterior cameras for day/night driving and higher speeds.
  • Ultrasonic Sensors: 12 ultrasonic sensors provide 360° close-range awareness
All of that said, and with complete autonomy, you will likely see that (like Rivian) OEM's will add LiDAR in the future to their sensor array to better handle bad weather, but nothing is perfect when it goes to hell in a hand basket!
 
The other great thing about Hands-Free functionality is its extreme usefulness in intermittent cases. Say for example, you drop something on the floor, or you need to remove your jacket, or you need to reach for something in the back seat, or you spill something, or you bought something that you shouldn't have bought for lunch and its a shit-show and you're eating and driving. Yeah, you should NEVER do these things!

But, if you are honest, you will say "oh yeah, I did that"... We all have done it. If you try to deny ever doing something stupid while driving , well sorry - I don't believe you.

So, flipping the stalk and allowing the car to take control even if for just a minute can in fact be a huge safety gain... BUT you need to activate it and use it. What is the number 1 cause of all accidents? DISTRACTED DRIVING. I would argue that a good hands-free system that is easy to use & works well can be a literal life-saver.

Honestly this is how the school bus I was on in 7th grade ended up on its side in a ditch and almost in the river. Driver was young. Went to pick something up that had fallen on the floor and drifted in the other lane. Turned to hard trying to get back into the lane and flipped the bus. Luckily no one was even seriously hurt. I never went on another church trip again.
 
No and I’d rather not subsidize the r&d for it given that it has very little value added relative to price.

I joke, but they caused the recent accident with my wife's van. I have told them "Do not yell or scream in the car or it can cause an accident" their entire lives. Well it finally happened in October when two of the kids were yelling and fighting and hit the youngest, who began screaming and crying. Wife panicked and turned around. Out of her view a school bus pulled across three lanes of traffic and caused all the cars in front of her to slam on their brakes. By the time she turned back around it was too late.

It's a 2020 Odyssey so it does have several safety features like lane keep assist, Adaptive Cruise control, auto brake engagement, etc. But she didnt have Cruise Control engaged and her foot was on the gas so it didnt engage any of the collusion avoidance systems.

It would be nice if those features could be enabled without the driver activating cruise control... but we will see how it ends up being implemented.


She and the kids are all still pretty shaken up by what happened. Everyone is physically fine now but the whole ordeal really put things into perspective for them. I hope it never happens again. Scary stuff.


Snow can definately be an issue if it piles up on the sensors. I think some have been putting heating elments on them to try and shed snow/ice build up
Heaters are a good idea. Depending on where they are located, I would like to see a windshield sprayer nozzle pointed at the forward facing cameras. That fluid can be heated as well. Would also help with basic dust and mud after you pull off the trail and back onto main roads.
