A Better Route Planner says your one-way trip out would use 419 kWh and take 13 hours, 50 minutes. One of the reasons I don’t use it is it’s super conservative and always suggests I stop before I need to. It suggests you need 3 stops to get there. If you can charge on a hotel charger, it’ll be about the same on the way home. You could do the trip with two longer stops in each direction, but that might not be to your liking.
This was a lot of driving in a day. We were on a mission. We really probably should have stopped for ther night.
 
I’m curious about your times. If I’m reading this correctly, it took you approximately 13 hours to go 691 miles? That’s 53 mph average. That suggests to me that you stopped for a meal at least once? Maybe twice?

Assuming that’s the case, then your total trip time shouldn’t be any different on your drive out or back, if your charging and meal/restroom stops coincide.

I’m assuming the Scout BEV has a 130 kWh battery.

I’m assuming you would get poor efficiency of 2.0 miles/kWh.

691 miles at 2.0 miles/kWh = 345.5 kWh.
But you charged from home for the first ~350 miles.
So:
130 kWh @ $0.174/kWh at home = $22.62
215 kWh @ $0.46/kWh (average in IL and SC for DCFC) = $99.13

Outbound cost ~= $121.75

Next Assumption: You charged at a free L2 charger overnight, arriving with 5% remaining and ending your charge with 100%

Exploring the area and heading home, you drive 952 miles.
952 miles @ 2 miles/kWh = 476 kWh.
You got 123.5 kWh overnight charge at the hotel for free.
Drive home using about 352.5 kWh @ $0.46/kWh = $162.15

You arrive home with some low percentage. And you don’t need to go out tomorrow, just plug in and tomorrow the truck will be well on its way to being refilled for your low-cost home energy price.

Total cost: $162.15 + $121.75 = $283.90

You forgot to account for the cost to fill the car before leaving town. That would be about $61.92 at $4.52/gallon, assuming it’s a 13.7 gallon tank.

Supra cost: $275.55, including the first fill-up, but not the last fill-up.
Scout BEV cost: $283.90, including the first fill-up, a free overnight charge, and not the last fill-up.

Because of the dramatic increases in cost at DCFC recently, it’s now about the same cost to drive an EV on a road trip as it is to drive a gassy car. I typically get 2.3-2.5 in my truck, so my cost would be about 15-25% lower than these estimates.
What would this trip look like with the EREV? Just curious to see what the difference in cost would be.

Assume the 500 miles range as advertised. Assume a 15 gallon tank. Assume the idealized 150 miles of range on all-electric.
However, apply the same efficiency reduction to this as we did for the BEV (a 25% reduction).
So, 112.5 miles of range.
And assuming 23 mpg based on 350 miles of gas-only range * 75% is 17.25 mpg.
Assume 691 miles on the way out as I did in my first example.
Assume 55.6 kWh of battery (based on 2 miles/kWh for the non-ideal range).

Assume $4.62/gallon average cost of gas on the way out.
Assume $4.75/gallon average cost of gas around town and on the way home.
These are based on the same stops mentioned by @cyure.

Okay I kept stats on our trip so one of you EV owners could tell me how this will compare to a BEV.

We left Illinois at 1:47 AM CST with a full tank. I had filled the Supra up and drove home the 2 miles so full.

The mileage I’m giving you is the total miles traveled per the trip odometer. Not how many miles traveled on that leg of the trip.

The Supra takes premium gas.

253 miles - filled up $38.71 - 8.567 gallons - $4.52 a gallon.

460 miles - filled up $31.50 - 6.775 gallons - $4.64 a gallon

691 miles - filled up $33.60 - 7.15 gallons -$4.69 a gallon

Arrived in our hotel room at 4:00 EST.

Drove out to the factory and around town.

Left town at 2:04 am EST

847 miles - filled up $43.66 - 8.385 gallons - $5.22 a gallon

1076 miles - filled up $$27.50 - 6.456 gallons - $4.25 a gallon

1324 miles - filled up $38.66 - 8.055 gallons - $4.79 a gallon

Arrive home at 2:05 pm CST with a total trip of 1643 miles.

There’s 2 bars left on the gas gauge. I need to get gas but we were too tired that day. I’ll go later.

How long would a trip like this in my BEV Traveler take? Cost?

Hey @cyure here are my charging stats from charging overnight Friday night, leaving my house Saturday morning until the time I returned home. Btw it was 210 miles one way from my house to Scout. Last picture is only my drive home from the event I didn't remember to log my drive there (was too excited to see Traveler), but if you have questions let me know.

FYI I have 2025 Standard Range R1T with larger tires on it now than what can from the factory LT275/65R20 and my max expected range is 258 miles which clearly it wont get on the highway lol! In fact, if I remember correctly I saw 1.66 mi/kWh avg at some point 😅

I'd assume the EREV will run on regular unleaded instead of the premium the Supra requires, so there should be a bit of savings there (~17% based on local pricing).
I really am curious about the operational efficiencies of running an EREV on the highway. What kind of mpg would the Scout get operating only on the Harvester? Obviously nobody knows yet, but the laws of physics still apply, so I doubt it'll be good, haha. I'd love to see something in line with the Tahoe diesel's 27mpg on the 75-mph highway test C&D did, but also recognize the lower energy density of gas vs diesel.
 
Couple pictures of the event before the game. It was a nice size crowd to be able to still see the vehicles and not feel overwhelmed with people. People were there to specifically see the Scouts, but some came to the game and wandered in to see what was going on. There was plenty of SM staff on hand at the event to answer questions.

Is Ionna still offering better stating prices for charging or Tesla out of control? The rate conversion between the two is crazy. Appears Tesla charger is way more per KWh.

Fair critique regarding the gas prices. I didn’t look up gasbuddy’s averages for non-premium (“regular" to me is leaded gasoline—showing my age, old thoughts are difficult to drop). A savings of 17% seems reasonable.

Burning a fossil fuel to run an engine cannot escape the ~75% loss to waste heat, so it’ll always be difficult to get high efficiencies. That’s one reason burning fossil fuels to generate electricity for the grid is more efficient than burning it to move the vehicle (as direct drive or as an EREV). The heat is the point of a fossil fuel power plant—it’s meant to turn a steam turbine. But burning it to move a vehicle means that heat is wasted.

Tesla is typically the most expensive, but to be fair, Tesla would've been better if I was a "member" but I'm not paying for a membership when I hardly ever supercharge or roadtrip. But I very much love Ionna, they have fantastic locations, good amenities, and most of the time they're the cheapest if you don't have any charging memberships.

I detest the idea of yet another thing to have a membership to... especially if you're talking having multiple to make a trip happen. Just seems silly to me if 90% of the time you're charging at home.

Same! This is exactly why I select on my UI to filter out and only show me chargers to Rivian, Tesla, or Ionna because I'm not paying any additional subscriptions either. However, in emergency situations I will clear the filter and hope there is T2P when I get there lol!
