I think it would depend on how the driver wants to manage it.
Assume the 500 miles range as advertised. Assume a 15 gallon tank. Assume the idealized 150 miles of range on all-electric.
However, apply the same efficiency reduction to this as we did for the BEV (a 25% reduction).
So, 112.5 miles of range.
And assuming 23 mpg based on 350 miles of gas-only range * 75% is 17.25 mpg.
Assume 691 miles on the way out as I did in my first example.
Assume 55.6 kWh of battery (based on 2 miles/kWh for the non-ideal range).
Assume $4.62/gallon average cost of gas on the way out.
Assume $4.75/gallon average cost of gas around town and on the way home.
These are based on the same stops mentioned by
@cyure.
Assume the driver doesn’t stop for charging during the drive, but does charge at the hotel. So only gas stops during the drive.
Trip out:
The vehicle will get 112.5 miles on electric-only: 55.6 kWh @ $0.174/kWh =
$9.67
The rest will be gas: 578.5 miles @ 17.25 mpg; 33.5 gallons @ $4.62/gal =
$154.94
Recharge 55.6 kWh overnight for free, so that’s 112.5 miles for free.
Trip around town and back home:
839.5 miles (952 - 112.5).
839.5 miles @ 17.25 mpg @ $4.75/gal =
$231.17
Add in the cost to recharge and refuel at home, making the same assumption (full recharge and 60% of a full tank needs refueling):
9 gallons * $4.52 =
$40.68
55.6 kWh * $0.174/kWh =

If we use
@cyure 17 mpg for her Jeep, and an average of $4.69/gallon: Total distance of 1643 miles / 17 mpg = 96.65 gallons @4.69 = $453.27.
Total cost to drive the EREV:
$446.14
Total cost to drive the BEV: $303.79
Total cost to drive the Supra: $312.70
Total cost to drive the Jeep: $453.27
Note that we’re comparing a large SUV with a small Supra, so the efficiency difference makes a huge difference here.
Also note that these numbers are very precise when they’re probably only good to two significant figures, at best. So I would say:
Estimates:
$450 for the EREV
$450 for the Jeep
$310 for the Supra.
$300 for the BEV
Another Note: Most people don’t do a lot of long distance road trips so the EREV will perform better around town than the Jeep, getting an average of about (we’re still guessing here) 33 mpg, so almost twice the efficiency of the Jeep for around town.
A driver who stops to eat lunch could choose to recharge instead of gassing up (or do both). They could save themselves some money by recharging.
