R2 Launch Watch

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
I am seeing so many posts online with people very confused as to why their delivery window is what it is based on when they made their reservation.

Does anyone know what Rivian is requiring for a deposit to place an order?

I refuse to commit to a 5 figure purchase without test driving it, probably more than once. the 30 minutes for a tech heavy vehicle feels really tight (and that seems to be the sentiment with those who have gone too)
The 30 mins is only for the drive, they have R2 floor models that you can sit in and play with for as long as you want. I strongly recommend and feel it will be a more enjoyable experience by arriving well before your test drive and sitting in and getting yourself familiar with the vehicle via the floor model before you test drive.

Good to know. Thanks for that info

Thanks for the info! I will definitely carve out some time to do that.

Just figuring out who to bring with me lol....

Wife - Passenger princess, theoretical secondary driver.
Dad - EV curious, good bonding activity

The kids don't get a say.

I’m hoping Scout production is the same and they are able to make more than they project the first year.

Great that they are being optimistic, but if they don’t pass that mark there stock will come tumbling down. And from what analysts have said if they hit $9 a share, Rivian will have to close. So they better hit their targets. Hopefully they continue to grow. This week there stock has been raging

That would be great. To be realistic, it is probably a little easier for Rivian to exceed forecast production numbers at this stage with an experienced staff & already-proven processes in place that they could leverage for their 2nd BEV product launch. Notably, the R2 is also a much more simple & less complex variant than R1 - that was a very intentional build objective. It will greatly help with production & costs, but also with faster and more efficient service as they continue to scale, I imagine.

It will be interesting to see if Scout can fast track production & leverage VW's experience in spinning up factories and launching new models. There are parallels there for sure, but Scout is also adding a lot more complexity, parts, SW and production time with Harvester in the mix too. Of course the production forecasts will be different for Scout and for Rivian. I think for Scout, the big win will come if they can simply stay around the forecast numbers for the first year, then build on that success, THEN launch their own second variant to drive even more mass-market appeal.

Right, it was a gift and they just don’t need it anymore. Because everyone buys a car and doesn’t need it after 50 miles. Just be honest. They bought it to flip.
Same will happen with the Scouts, as it did with the Broncos and sadly there are always people willing to throw away money to say they were first. Sad but true-as the saying goes-“there’s an a$$ for every seat”

I finally was able to snag a demo slot over the weekend! A few of my observations/thoughts - They were restricting drives to 15 minutes even though appointment slots were a half hour. This is annoying, especially since the Rivian location is in Downtown Denver, so getting a decent route in that time is not really feasible. That being said, I did floor it on an empty side street, and the acceleration was vomit inducing fast. We did get there early to sit in the floor model to try and get familiar with it before driving. That was a little tough because there were 3ish groups all there to look at the R2, so everyone was trying to do the same thing.

Things I like:
  • The size. This is a much more workable size for my needs than the R1S and even the Scout. After seeing the Traveler in person, I've really been worried about how big it is. The R2 feels much more realistic. But, even given the smaller size, it uses its interior space well. The frunk is nice (smaller than R1 and Scouts). The cargo space behind the rear seats feels much bigger and more usable than the stats suggest. There's also a ton of space below the cargo floor. You can put a spare there, but if you don't opt for that, lots of extra storage!
  • Driving dynamics. Very comfortable and what you'd expect from a more mid-sized SUV compared to the "truckier" feels of the R1S
  • Seats were very comfortable! Especially compared to the ones in my Ioniq, which I find to be too stiff (one of my very few complaints about the Ioniq, honestly).
  • Rivian colors are so nice. I've had my eye on Catalina Cove, but we drove a Half Moon Gray and it was really pretty. I told myself I don't want another boring (white/gray) car, but that Gray could sway me. I also like Launch Green! So many good choices.
  • The rear window fold down is great. The external button to control it from outside the car worked terribly. I feel like there's not a ton of scenarios where that would be the way I'd lower it, but you never know.
Potential turn offs for me:
  • I had seen some complaints in write ups about the A/C system, and I'd agree that something wasn't quite right about it. It was a hot 100 degree, sunny Denver day, so the A/C needed to work hard. My husband was in the front passenger seat, and even after messing with all the settings, he didn't feel like he could get sufficient air on him unless the fan was all the way turned up. And when the fan was all the way up (on auto), it was LOUD. Like you couldn't hear the radio loud.
  • The touch screens of it all. I'm sure that a lot of this discomfort would go away over time as you become acclimated to the UX and get all your preferences set, but it's still something I do not love. Having simple things like mirror adjustments, climate, etc...requiring selecting into menus before you can do what you want still seems frustrating and dangerous to me. I know you can save user preferences, and people who advocate for this approach say it's a "set it and forget it" type of thing, but that's just not my experience driving. Sometimes I want to sit in a little different seating position based on how I'm feeling. Sometimes I want the air flow blowing directly at me, and sometimes I don't. In my Ioniq, the button to fold the mirrors is on the door right above the window toggles. I love it, because I can be in the middle of parking in a tight spot, or pulling into my driveway into the garage, and just reach down and fold the mirrors without thinking about it at all. I don't have to look at it, etc...You can't do that when you have to open a menu first and then make sure you're pressing in the correct area on the touchscreen, all while trying to park. Again, I don't know if I can really form a true opinion on this without living with the vehicle for a significant period of time, but it's really such a bummer. Aside from those functionality concerns, the UX does seem really nice and appealing.
Overall, keeping it on the top of my list. My order window estimate is Nov-Dec 2026. That's a little earlier than we'd need, since the Ioniq lease is up Dec '27. But our Rav is paid off, so it wouldn't be the worst thing to carry 3 cars for awhile, and my husband and I would be able to both drive EV and have the Rav as a backup. I don't think I want to trade it in since it's such a good car, and if we can make the financials work without using the equity on it, that would be great. There's some other outstanding life stuff that may or may not be a factor over the next few months, but we'll see.

Vomit inducing. Ha! Yep when my son floored it I about lost my mind. They are really reducing the test drive times and that’s too bad. At the factory it went from 45 minutes down to 30 and that’s not near enough either.

Are you keeping your Scout reservation? Let us know what you decide to do. After all this is transportation and people have to do what works for them.

Yes, still keeping the Scout reservation. Never know what life is going to bring in the next few years! I also do still really love the design.
