Planned obsolescence and lasting a lifetime

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I hope Scout has lots of physical buttons so when the screen breaks, I won’t be left to rely on it. Also, I hope they make the vehicles easy to repair for the owner. That way you don’t have to take it to a dealership every time you need to do an oil change or fix something minor I just hope they don’t add lots of bloat to the car to make it trendy and try to keep the vehicles as reliable as they can

Good point-wonder if SM could change that or make it a factory/accessories option that gets done before delivery. Putting the safety glass cover on my cellphone (with no air bubbles or minute crumble is a hellish nightmare-can’t imagine my OCD is going to enjoy doing it hunched over a dashboard. I’ll go $65 just for the convenience
I’ll just have my husband do it. He takes care of putting screen protectors on anything I need screen protectors on.

Does anybody actually want the gloss? Fingerprints, being blinded by the sun, being distracted by endless reflections... Sure, it looks nice in pictures, but I don't understand the idea in a vehicle meant to be used.
I'm guessing the screens you will see in production will be quite good, and very easy to see in daylight - I would give it a chance, but still get a screen protector. I have one from a company called T-Wraps that is quite good, still looks like new after installing in 2022.

Good news... The one I installed was a slightly softer material I think - super easy to install. Took like 2 mins!

Sadly the Scout will be both. We know that at the heart of this vehicle is tech, which will be superseded - in a short number of years, there will definitely be something better. Still, we want it to last, not just for as far as we own it (maybe 5 years, maybe 20) - but long enough that it has a strong resale value as well.

Sadly, vehicles are a huge number of consumable parts, parts that wear and age. While occasionally it is fun to upgrade one, it is rarely cost effective to. The best we can do is maintain them, accept the patina as they age, and enjoy them for what they are. But who knows, in 10 years, maybe a solid state conversion will be the new LS swap.

One of the things I like about the upcoming Slate truck is their concept of replacing the factory installed digital displays, navigation and sound with a simple tablet or phone.

Are you going to be getting a Slate?
Probably not as it appears to be just too small for my use. The two door configuration would be problematic and the range is light for where I live. But I do like some of the concepts they are working into the vehicle like bring-your-own-device for displays, DIY service videos and instruction, and easy-peasy customization.

But looking at it logically raises many questions, when other well-equipped EVs can get better range, and have more "features" for a very similar price, so how much is the "BYO" really saving
I'm certainly not promoting the Slate as the perfect EV, just saying that some of the concept decisions are attractive to me.
As far as BYOD ... I personally prefer stand-alone, easily replaceable, easily-updated components without additional subscription fees.

Besides Slate is there any new car out there that comes without some sort of screen?

Especially when you turn it into an “SUV”. It’s up there with Ioniqs, etc.
Yeah, I'm not sold on the value part of the Slate. The base pick up model seems to be a good value for certain uses though. For example, the least expensive Maverick I can find locally is a $35,000 hybrid. The slate is $10k less and can be converted to an suv in the future if your situation changes ... kind of a cool concept. Have a kid ... instead of buying a new car just update your pick up with an suv package.

I haven't shopped them lately, but my plow truck (2020 Ram 2500) is a base Tradesman trim and just comes with what is basically a radio. It's a 6" screen that handles audio and the rear view camera. The slate does have a display above the steering wheel but I haven't seen what it all does.

I'm used to motorcycles and ATVs where it's pretty common to use your phone for navigation and music.
