Planned obsolescence and lasting a lifetime

I hope Scout has lots of physical buttons so when the screen breaks, I won’t be left to rely on it. Also, I hope they make the vehicles easy to repair for the owner. That way you don’t have to take it to a dealership every time you need to do an oil change or fix something minor I just hope they don’t add lots of bloat to the car to make it trendy and try to keep the vehicles as reliable as they can

Good point-wonder if SM could change that or make it a factory/accessories option that gets done before delivery. Putting the safety glass cover on my cellphone (with no air bubbles or minute crumble is a hellish nightmare-can’t imagine my OCD is going to enjoy doing it hunched over a dashboard. I’ll go $65 just for the convenience

I’ll just have my husband do it. He takes care of putting screen protectors on anything I need screen protectors on.

Does anybody actually want the gloss? Fingerprints, being blinded by the sun, being distracted by endless reflections... Sure, it looks nice in pictures, but I don't understand the idea in a vehicle meant to be used.

I'm guessing the screens you will see in production will be quite good, and very easy to see in daylight - I would give it a chance, but still get a screen protector. I have one from a company called T-Wraps that is quite good, still looks like new after installing in 2022.

Good news... The one I installed was a slightly softer material I think - super easy to install. Took like 2 mins!

Sadly the Scout will be both. We know that at the heart of this vehicle is tech, which will be superseded - in a short number of years, there will definitely be something better. Still, we want it to last, not just for as far as we own it (maybe 5 years, maybe 20) - but long enough that it has a strong resale value as well.

Sadly, vehicles are a huge number of consumable parts, parts that wear and age. While occasionally it is fun to upgrade one, it is rarely cost effective to. The best we can do is maintain them, accept the patina as they age, and enjoy them for what they are. But who knows, in 10 years, maybe a solid state conversion will be the new LS swap.
