Spare Tire, Backpack, or Bald?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
I would probably order with the spare tire carrier and then remove it, install the tire underneath where it belongs, and run bare most of the time. When I did have the carrier on, it would likely carry the backpack instead of the tire. I don’t like that much weight hanging off the vehicle that far aft of and above the rear axle. If I were going onto some of my favorite trails where tires can get destroyed, I would consider putting a second spare on the tire carrier.
I was wondering if they'd offer the option of an undermount spare, but I suppose that would depend on the tire size package. IDK, but I think any tire package with 35s or 37s would be a challenge fitting a spare as an undermount, with those tire sizes the only option for a full sized spare may be the swing out.

There are a few threads that talk about this... I think the Terra will offer under-mount and the Traveler will be the rear-mount with an option of interior storage...

The best person to follow to get answers for questions like that is @Jamie@ScoutMotors. He will answer our questions when he can and he also lets us know when they will be on display. I have seen the Traveler in person twice and the Terra once. When then come within driving distance I highly recommend going.

Jamie stated that 37s will not be offered from factory. And that you will be able to order with a tire carrier or without but hasn’t stated where the spare will be if you order it without.

Welcome again!

One of the reasons why I chose to reserve a Traveler is fitment into my garage (normal 2-car width but about 25' deep). I have a 2025 Wrangler JLU and it fits very tight with the rear swing gate open. My workshop cannot be moved backwards becuase I have about a .75" space for my upright freezer door to open. The length of my Jeep from nose to the open swing gate is 18'6". With using two pieces of tape as guide on the grage floor, I can easily park without having to get out to check the swing gate space or if the garage door will hit my bumper. I'm hoping this will be the case with the Traveler as I don't have much room to spare.

From nose to open swing gate on your Jeep is 222 inches long.

The Traveler is 191 inches without the spare mounted. We know a 33” diameter tire will fit on the swing gate and that there will still be quite a bit more structure holding the spare.

191+33 = 224 inches.

The Traveler with an open spare swing gate will probably not fit into your garage with the garage door closed. If you get the BEV and pass on the swing gate, you should be able to mount the spare under the vehicle, but probably not if you go to 37” tires, maybe not with 35” tires. That information is still unclear.

If I am allowed, I’ll try to remember to grab some dimensions with my laser tape and with the swing gate open when I’m in Scottsdale looking at the Traveler in a few weeks.

Welcome to the community! I have a JK and similar situation. I can just fit with the gate open and the garage closed due to a cabinet at the back of the garage.

This is the measurement I got with the measuring tool on my iPhone. I took this at Nats last year.

@SpaceEVDriver I’m curious if your laser measuring tool gets a similar number.

Also if you want to see a lot of pictures and more measurements I took I have two threads:

CYURE GOES TO NATIONALS
CYURE GOES TO CHICAGO

You can find them by searching my name. My husband took over 1100 pictures at the two events and I posted lots of them.

Welcome to the community!

Thanks for the dimensions for the traveler. I'll head back down to my garage and do some more measuring. I do plan on having the spare tire and the extended range so if it doesn't fit with the swing gate open, I'll just have to load it up in my driveway. I'm planning on several road trips so the extended range and a spare will be a must. Speaking of road trips, I wanted to change my username to RoadTripScout but I can't seem to find a place to edit. Any ideas?

I don’t know how to change that. @Jamie@ScoutMotors is there a way to change your username? Anyone else know?

Thanks!

Thanks for the measurement photo. My swing gate is 44.75" (3' 8.75") long so 2.25" shorter than the Traveler. I will go check out all those photos.

With our Lightning and Mustang BEVs, we've done about 45k miles of road trips, much on freeways to be sure, but at least 20k miles off the beaten path, back roads, forest service roads, and non-road “roads." We’ve used our Lightning's full-sized spare (underbody mount) several times. But we’ve never even felt like we needed an EREV for those trips. Not to say you won’t have a desire for it. I’m just saying, my experience with road tripping an awful lot is enough to convince me we’ll never need an EREV for our trips.

Even if you pull up 2-3 feet that gives you the load room and if lucky your tire will sit in line with the OH door signal so nobody accidentally hits garage door opener while you are under it. I’ve done that in a previous house/vehicle. Blocking the sensor is just a little extra security

I do not want a tire carrier. I'm hoping BEVs will be able to have a spare inside, under the floor, where the Harvester would go. Yes, there are more batteries in the BEV but those will be low. I'm hoping there could be room between the batteries and load floor for a spare.
