Spare tire discussion

Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. Which size spare would you get?

  • 33-inch spare under the body

It has been stated the standard combo will be 18” with 33’s.
33’s and 35’s will fit on swing out tire rack. At the reveal the didn’t specifically say the 35’s wouldn’t fit under but implied 35’s and up would be bed mounted on terra.
Has any manufacturers had a factory Pickup tailgate tire mount?

I've not seen any as standard. I found this picture of an aftermarket one. Not sure how I feel about it.

Yes I have found all kinds of Pickup aftermarket tailgate spare mounts. I was curious if anyone has had one from the factory. Non come to mind for me.
I don’t think I have ever seen a spare on a pickup. I see them on 4Runners all the time. I also like the ladders they put on 4Runners. I wonder if we could get a ladder on the Traveler.
 
Personally I’m ok with the 35’s. Like you I’d like to have a bed cover, and the spare would sure impinge on that as well as take too much room in the bed. I want the rear mount like the Traveler. Or since I don’t particularly care one way or another about the “Frunk”, put the spare there.
Frunk isn’t big enough to contain a 35 wheel. Was suggested early on and we were told likely too tight. Having seen it at reveal I understand why they said it-just too big to fit in the space that’s left

I would probably buy a rear aftermarket bumper with a swing out. So neither option of the poll for me. But several friends have the receiver hitch style and they like them. The newer ones barely make noise or move offroad.

Good discussion. Like @Logan I’m thinking a small difference between spare and normal is not an issue. I’d like to have the 35’s and keep the 33” so it will store under the bed. But I really like that swing out carrier on the Traveler.

Many pick-ups mount the spare underneath the rear of the truck (exposed to the road) with a cable release. It's not great if you live in a place like the Northeast with salt and sludge in the winter. Rivian's spare is actually hidden in a compartment underneath the bed of the truck instead. Only downside to that is that the tire could potentially be needed when you have a payload on top of the spare compartment, in which case you need to remove whatever is in the bed of the truck to access the spare.

I live in the Northeast, and I have had a pickup truck with the spare under the bed. After a few years I had to throw the spare away because the rim had rusted through and the tire was ruined. I will definitely be getting the optional bed mounted spare tire carrier for my Terra.

Yeah - I actually much prefer the Rivian set-up and having a hidden compartment for a full sized spare. I have yet to need to use it, and my bed is generally free from tons of stuff that would need to be cleared. Its a pretty nice solution, and you can always just throw a spare on a mount in the bed too if needed. They had Rivians in the Rebelle Rallye with spares mounted in the bed upright.

Or since there's no engine to cool up front, an oversized spare could optionally be put in front of the "grill" and also act as a light duty push bumper. There are pros and cons to both these options, but they could be options for those this would work for.

That is the first time I have ever seen a swingout replacement tailgate.

That is freaking awesome!
