In this article, Jeep Willys, Ford Bronco, Toyota Landcruiser, Scout, and Chevy Blazer are all mentioned. All hold a foothold in the market, too bad Chevy hasn't caught wind of this offroad market.
It takes time and expense to build an engine plant. In the short term, it's easier to just pay tariffs on something made in Mexico. Tariffs come and go.I still think it will be an existing engine design like the VW 4 cylinders currently made in Mexico, but either they will be built in South Carolina at the main factory or somewhere in the US to avoid any possible issues from tariffs etc. Also would like it to have port injection but I only know Toyota makes engines with both port and direct injection. So the range extender is likely only direct because of in the podcast it being mentioned it would be a high output N/A 4-cyl and direct injection allows for more power then port.

VW EA211 1.6 MPI 4 cylinderLove this. Any speculation on which 4 cylinder? All currently manufactured vw engines are turbos with direct injection (some have duel port though). I do worry about carbon buildup on direct injection engines if used as an erev. Thoughts or insights?

Skoda took over the development of all the EA211 engines. So i guess it would be coming from where they make their engines. Unless its still making it in Mexico.VW EA211 1.6 MPI 4 cylinder
Wow, yeah-that would certainly fit the bill. I remember seeing that as one of the European engine options. Is it available in U.S. or import from Germany?VW EA211 1.6 MPI 4 cylinder
I’m not sure it’s used stateside at the moment but it certainly is in the rest of the world. It is a relatively simple engine as far as anything modern goes. I read it was created with developing countries in mind as it is so simple and reliable. Simple and reliable sound like Scout to me!Wow, yeah-that would certainly fit the bill. When I looked this wasn’t being manufactured in the region…however I agree that would fit the bill!Wow, yeah-that would certainly fit the bill. I remember seeing that as one of the European engine options. Is it available in U.S. or import from Germany?
The 1.5 in the Taos is made in Mexico. It's on the EA211 family. They should be able to make a suitable engine there.Skoda took over the development of all the EA211 engines. So i guess it would be coming from where they make their engines. Unless its still making it in Mexico.
