Rivian’s R2 will 'underpin' all future Volkswagen EVs, exec says

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Not to disappoint you but Scout will indeed be using that zonal architecture and platforms. It’s been announced multiple times over the past year-ish. Rivians software is pretty much the best in the business and VW was very smart working the buy in that they did. VW wasn’t exactly killing it with their proprietary software

I've read this differently since this news was dropped a week or two ago.

They specifically say "platform", and not just "software". And they talk about things like "suspension tuning".

So personally, this feels like they're announcing that the R2 will be the underpinning for ALL of the new vehicles (hardware, and software). They'll use the same "bones", and stretch it/shrink it, raise/lower it, and tune it differently for all the vehicles moving forward for VW.

However, given that we know that the Scout will be body on frame + solid rear axle, and that the R2 series is IFS/IRS, and unibody, I'm thinking that the scout must be exempt from this statement, as it was announced/under development WELL before this happened, and you know, is a independent brand...

Right...?

RIGHT?!??

Speaking from near complete ignorance, I really think they’re just talking about the underlying electrical and computer architecture. Of course they want to emphasize the importance of that, but I don’t think they’re talking about a platform in the way something like MEB or Hyundai’s E-GMP is a platform, where it’s the whole skateboard and they add a body to the top of it. They’re just talking it up a bit.

Clearly the scout hardware (frame, solid axle, everything built on that) has been designed from the ground up and is not something they’re gonna be doing on typical Volkswagen vehicles. Scout will be unique, it’s a different market, they’re just taking advantage of the pieces that makes sense.

Don’t worry, keep the faith.

They are talking about a SW "platform", they are also interviewing the Chief SW Officer. Tuning of mechanical things (like a suspension) can be done by SW on their platform. R2 and the Zonal architecture will allow Scout Motors to focus MORE ENERGY on the HW and their trucks, leading into production. They will get a head-start in building state of the are features on top of the platform. But it will be Scout's U/I and experience sitting on top

No.

They are talking about the tech platform. Zonal network architecture and software. The actual car platform won’t be an all Rivian affair.

Same goes for Scout. It is our completely new body on frame platform and hardware (axles, motors, brakes, suspension, body, etc., etc.
Not that I don’t appreciate the answer, but go enjoy your vacation! We can keep the wheels on the Scout so to speak for a bit so you have have some downtime. Have a fun vacation!

Thanks Jamie!

The whole "suspension tuning" bit got me thinking it was more than just the Zonal software that VW was thinking would be used across multiple models.

But I always assumed that the Scout wouldn't use the hardware platform, so I'm glad to hear that is confirmed :).

Thank you for clearing up any misconceptions going around.

Correct. If reading it that way. The way the worded it in the article it sounded like structure in one sentence and electronics in another. I read it your way first time then read some and went back to electronic so now I really don’t know. But as a physical, structural platform Scout will definitely be its own thing
