Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. I’m right there with you on full BEV vs Harvester.

We have a lot of time to decide, but the more I listen to folks here that own BEVs the more chill I feel about forgoing the Harvester option.
Exactly. The wife and I just took a trip. 200mi each way. We stopped for coffee, stretch, and restroom break there and back. Took as long for Starbucks to be done as it would for us to add 50miles. Made me think maybe the whole EV thing wouldn’t be so bad.

Same. I’ve said I’m committed to but occasionally I question the choice but since we have a newer larger SUV I’m willing to to take the chance
 
Yep, one of the things that made me reserve the Terra was dimensions closer to an F-150. If it turned out to be closer to Tacoma size then that would be a dealbreaker for me.
This is probably my only deal breaker. If it were Tacoma-sized, it would be a downgrade from my R1T. I like that Scout is building a full-sized truck (but can understand why others might want smaller dimensions too). If my Rivian had a bed that was 1 foot longer and a width that was ~2 inches wider, it would be absolutely perfect! I think the Terra puts me back into the territory I'm looking for. Terra looks to be about perfect dimensionally, but will see where things land in production with final specs.

But I also don’t need another full-sized truck nor a massive SUV. The next BEV we get will be replacing the Mustang Mach-E, but my partner wants a more off-road capable vehicle, and doesn’t want a full-sized truck. In three to five years when we’re ready to replace the Mustang, we’ll be looking for a Tacoma- or older, smaller 4Runner-sized BEV to replace it. We have a reservation for the R2, which I’m not sure will be what we want. Some people think Ford is going to announce on Monday that they’re bringing back the Ranchero as a BEV. The R1S is close to the right size, but is larger than we would prefer. There aren’t any other medium-sized off-road capable BEVs out there. If the Wranger Rubicon was offered as a BEV, that might be an option.

So is the Traveler an option, or is it still too big for your partner?

  • Solid roof not available, removable roof preferred, I hate/hated the glass roofs in my last/current two EVs
  • Terra cannot tow at least 10k lbs.
  • On board air not available at launch
  • Range below 270 miles
  • Bench seat not available ;-)

Oh I have a question. I have never had a full glass roof. I have something called a ClearLidz in my Wrangler. It’s just over the two front seats. I love it, so I was planning on getting the glass roof.

Can I ask why you hate your glass roof?

I have had 5.5' bed trucks, and 6.5' bed trucks. I know the Terra is going to be a 5.5' bed. Not sure if I would change my Traveler reservation if it was 6.5' - but do know it is a major consideration why I have never considered the Terra. The utility difference for me is huge. I want room to sleep and transport my dogs in AC. I gave up a weekend at the beach this weekend just because it is such an annoyance to travel there with kids and the dogs (we are in the heat of summer, and the dogs would have been kenneled in the bed - meaning I would not be able to start the 5hr drive till about 9pm). Driving till 2am is not a problem. Waking up to fish at 6am afterwards - problem. Why bother if I can not enjoy the trip - would be half dead all of Saturday from the late drive.

In some ways, my perfect vehicle would be a flatbed truck with an a/c yute tray and shell - but the cost of that is prohibitive. Even without the AC, and not configured in any usable way for me - it was about a $25k upgrade for my existing truck (between the yute flatbed and the shell). Part of that is importing one (not common in the US), but even if it was domestic it would still probably be $15k.

Good question. I think it comes down to the heat and where I live. In the summers, we average probably 98°. Even with reflective tint it still gets the car well over 160° inside so I generally have to have temp control on around hundred degrees. After sitting at work for 8 to 10 hours, I lose about 15% on my battery every day just sitting. I’ve had a couple of wranglers myself and there’s always something about the thin, hard top. That would be very hot on the head while driving. But the glass roof just seems to be that much more hotter than even the Wrangler poly roof. And one of my Teslas I tried the roof window shade that rolled back-and-forth and then the thought came to my mind is why I have glass at all. If all I’m going to do is cover it. I would just rather have a moonroof or retractable roof or a removable roof that have no glass. No science here just my own personal opinion and based on tens of thousands of miles of experience, I just don’t like the glass.

Now being in Illinois and working from home I don’t worry about the heat as much. I just known I don’t want a solid roof. That’s for sure. My husband has had convertibles for 30 years. His Supra is the first nonconvertible he has had and he’s partial to the cabana top. But ultimately my car, my decision.

That’s one reason why I love Jeeps with soft tops. Easy to put down for the open air drives and trails but easy to put back up in the rains and cold weather. I just had to learn not to keep anything of value in the Jeeps.

It always amazes me how many jeeps just leave tops down. Guess they don’t leave anything inside them

Yep, I drive my TJ top down about 9 months a year. Absolutely the cheapest Alpine stereo I could find to install, factory sound bar/faded/cracked grills and padding with upgraded speakers inside but no one can tell. The wheel lock I keep at home when not trailing, I have the CB rivnut bolted down, and the spare stays at home.

Needless to say the ignition switch is warn out and any key or screw driver can start it. I use to keep the soft top up and it got broken into / knifed twice and there was nothing inside to steal. An expensive lesson to learn that just keep the top down so anyone can look to see there is nothing worth going to jail or getting shot for …

The center console on mine locks but I’m sure someone could get into it if they really tried. And they make boxes that attach in the back somehow and lock so they can’t easily be walked off with.

I knew they had security measures but assume most don’t buy and just leave open. When we built are house the builder always left the door unlocked and I complained to him. He said if people want in to steal stuff they will get in and it will be one more broken thing I’ll have to pay for to replace. I thought afterwards that it’s a valid point-but sad it has to be that way

I look at this from a different perspective:

Theft isn’t all that common. It’s not zero, but it’s not like everybody is experiencing it all the time. Most of the fear of crime is generated by certain cable news and by industry trying to sell you useless protection from that crime (yes, there are some exceptions—I’m talking about petty crimes like theft).

Was anything stolen while the builder was working and leaving the door unlocked?

Nothing at our house but builders I’ve worked for have had it. Had a 5-unit townhome where they broke in, snapped the 2” copper sprinkler lines and cost us $1000’s at the time. And kicked in the doors so had my company left doors unlocked that would have saved some $$$ 🤣

Welcome.

I think VWs $10B investment in Rivian and billions into Scout pushes this out of the vaporware category.

A lot of EV startups fail because they run out of liquidity, and VW has plenty of cash and credit available to it to keep things on track.
I’d say the fact they are building a factory is a good sign it will happen.

Off the bat deal breakers would be -

-Range below 300 miles.
-Price over 70k
-Inability to test drive one before I buy
-If i somehow have to go through a VW dealership and they mark it up
-Scott basically buys his way into an administration and arbitrarily fires a bunch of people while possibly high on ketamine (former fed who left before it but 🖕to him)

I’m thinking ev green traveler with solid roof (or glass with shade, I believe that will be an option). No rear tire so it will fit better in my garage. No off road package
