Level I Charging at 30 amps (RV type setup)

I’m curious. Is there any setup where you can charge at Level I off of a 30A connection? This comes to mind because on my home backup inverter there is an open TT30 receptacle at 30A. The inverter is a Bluetti AC500 that runs at 120V only.

While my RV is 30amp and only uses a single phase, many RV's use 50amp split phase - which is pretty much is what you need for a level 2 charger. I think by code, it will need to be derated a bit from max level 2 - but it will get you mostly there. Full power level 2 needs to be hardwired to be listed as a 60amp load (that then is rated down to 80%, about 50 amps). But split phase 50 amp (derated to 40 amps) is not bad at all.

The charging standard allows for no more than 16 Amps at 120 Volts, and that isn’t a common implementation. I don’t know of any EVSE manufacturers who allow a draw of more than 16 Amps. I also don’t know of any standards-following EV manufacturer who allows their vehicle to request more than 16 Amps on 120 Volts. Most limit to 12 Amps.

The issue is that there’s no reliable method for learning what current the receptacle supports unless the device is purpose-built to use more than the lowest amperage plug, the NEMA 5-15. The devices can’t tell they’re plugged into a NEMA 5-20 plug unless that’s the only plug they have. And by design that would preclude them from using a 5-15, and eliminates most household outlets as possible charging stations. Similarly, a device doesn’t know it’s plugged into a TT-30 unless the TT-30 plug is what it’s designed with.

One could create an adapter, of course. But then your device would believe it should pull 30 (or 20) Amps maximum even though it’s plugged into a 15 Amp maximum receptacle.

And if you’re lucky the breaker trips.

I use the TT-30 plug on my power station with an adapter to a NEMA 5-15 to run my charger, but I only get 12 Amps draw. Without 240 Volts, that’s all I can draw.
