Gotta throw a wet blanket here on the parents buying Broncos and Jeeps for their kids.....Mamas, please don't let your babies drive high center of gravity vehicles. Young, inexperienced drivers are far more inclined to overcorrect in response to stimuli that more experienced drivers take in stride. They swerve sharply, skid sideways and flip over. A sedan or sports car with a lower center of gravity is much more forgiving.

When I was a kid I wanted a Suzuki Sidekick or Samurai so bad and my dad said absolutely not. They definitely earned the nicknames Sideflip and Somersault

Years ago when I was in middle school went on a church trip to the Colorado River. One of the young leaders was driving the school bus. He went to pick up something on the floor and drifted into the other lane. Turned the wheel like you would a car and flipped the bus. We rolled down an embankment and almost landed in the river.

I second that not putting kids in high center gravity things they aren’t prepared for.

Agree with you 100%. Worried when we had the Bronco-now she has a low sports sedan and having crawled in and out of it the past three days I can say I feel comfortable with its lower stance and center of gravity.
 
I don't disagree at all. On SUVs in the 80s and 90s there used to be warning stickers on the sunvisors about the handling characteristics being different from a car. One thing that really helps an EV is the battery being mounted low and somewhat evenly. It makes a substantial difference when it comes to lowering the center of gravity even on an otherwise tall vehicle.
 
Hello! I haven’t posted here for a bit. I was in the Jeep today and I had some more thoughts about how the doors lock and unlock automatically.

So in the Wrangler when you get going you have to get up to about 10 mph before the doors lock. As a woman, honestly I would like the doors to lock as soon as possible. Like I get in, shut the door and it locks.

Then when I turn the Jeep off it takes about 15 to 30 seconds before the doors unlock automatically. It would be nice if there was a setting where we can decide the length of time, or even better, they don’t unlock until a door is opened.

Then as I was walking away from my car I turned on the alarm and locked the doors. 2013 Wrangler so it’s still a key with the buttons on it and the horn beeps when it sets and locks. What do EVs do when you walk away? Automatically lock? Is there any noise to alert you when they do it? Honestly I would like the horn to beep when they lock. I don’t want to have to worry about someone getting in my unlocked vehicle because it didn’t lock properly.

Knowing your jeep is older it may lack newer features. Most cars nowadays give you a selection of settings. Acura had more than my honda but you get some control but I like the idea of extending the options a bit more. I’d like panic button to automatically have EV call 911 and geolocate the vehicle position and turn all cameras on that are part of vehicle and download as it records

Maybe it’s a hold panic to initiate then double click again to start that so if you accidentally hit panic you don’t instantly call 911

The Fords allow you to set many of these.

I think the auto-lock immediately could create a different safety concern. For example, it could end up locking a child in the car after you get out and close the driver's door. Since the default you're talking about is to lock immediately when you get in the car to drive it off, the key being in the car would not stop the lock action. If you forgot your key in the vehicle, it could then cause a dangerous situation.

All of my GM vehicles I have experience with from 2010-24 when you put it gear it locks the doors, and after parking the doors stay locked until you open the door, then there’s settings for locking after exit for time, sound, and lights.

And on the Rivian EDVs when you walk away with the key, the van chirps, flashes it lights and locks the doors, the EDVs don’t “present” when the key approaches though

I understand your unease. Our two Toyotas lock and unlock when you shift into and out of gear. Not exactly what you want but close. Sometimes in the early morning when getting in the first thing I do after opening the door is hit the lock button the moment after I open the door. I climb in and the door is locked when I close it.

Almost all of those features are configurable in my iX. I would imagine that by the time the Scout is available those sort of features will be standard fare for EVs. My current set up is that it unlocks automatically upon approach, locks as soon as drive is selected, unlocks only when I open the door not when in park, locks itself when I walk away. No chirps or sounds are on.

I didn’t think new cars would lock if keys were in the car. Our Acuras would not. Haven’t tested the hondas

Never have had a BMW lock its own keys. but once you step out of its cabin with the keys it locks. The signal perimeter is super tight on newer models.

This is not really an EV thing, more of a modern, SW-defined vehicle thing. It depends on SW development and the settings that are available in the UX, as well as the type of key being used.

With a key card or wrist band (for example), it's specifically and intentionally proximity-based in terms of where to place the card to gain access, or to "start" the vehicle in my R1T.

With my phone as a key, I can do all sorts of things. I can remotely unlock or lock, I can grant another driver access with their phone, I can walk up to the R1T and have the door handles present automatically and open when I am nearby. I can have it open 1 handle or all handles, etc. etc.

When I place my R1T in Drive, ALL doors lock immediately. When I come to a stop and place the truck in PARK, I have it set to open all door handles, unlock lift gate, unlock gear tunnel - unlock everything. Once placed in PARK, any passenger or the driver can open anything.

So, long story short, with Scout and a modern, SW-defined vehicle, there will be a ton of options. Sometimes new options area added as OTA's over time enhancing functionality or increasing configuration options or settings.

Here's a high level look at different key options for the R1T:
