Air Suspension vs. Coils - Long Term Durability vs. Real Capability

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Which suspension setup would you choose?

  • Factor air suspension - I value ride height adjustability and load leveling

    Votes: 5 20.8%
  • Traditional steel springs (coil/leaf) - I value long-term durability and simplicity

    Votes: 8 33.3%
  • Depends on execution - air could be worth it if Scout overbuilds it

Okay I keep thinking oh the Scout will be too expensive for people to potentially beat up on a trail.

But then I got to thinking, all the suspension work and wheels and tires etc on some of these offroad rigs looks like it costs a pretty penny.

So is it the same outlay of cash just looks a little different
I will take mine to places like Engineers Pass, Ophir Pass, Blackbear Pass, Moab, Padre Island National Seashore, etc.

But playing in rock gardens is a whole different ball of wax.

There are some people who easily have over $100k wrapped up in their builds and wheel the crap out of them.
$88k TRD Pro Sequoais and $115k Lexus LX700h Overtails on $25k Portals.
Jeep JKU Rubicons with 392 Hemis and Dana 60s.
Someone even did it in a Cybertruck... but it sounds like that trip didnt go as planned.

Like some others have mentioned they are a fraction of a fraction of the population, but there is definitely going to be at least one that immediately goes nuts with one of these vehicles and ends up in the news :ROFLMAO:

We dont know Scouts official warranty policy yet, and while they do say they will be designed to be modified, almost every auto manufacturer out there will completely void your vehicles warranty if you modify the frame. Flat out.

Many of them will deny powertrain warranties if you run oversized tires too.

So I would just design with the configurator the way you want it until the warranty period is over.

Not an official answer from Scout here, but manufacturers have to draw a line somewhere. We can't cover "stupid" in some cases. :D

That said, we expect people to offroad their vehicles and we will offer factory accessories for that purpose as well. Let's see what the fine print says when we get there.

Meanwhile, our teams are already talking about all the places we are going to "test" vehicles. So expect to see us take them to a wide variety of places before they reach the market. Hopefully we can take a few of you along for the ride.

I live right next to some of the most demanding off-road gravel in the southwest, often used by auto manufacturers for proving their off-road chops. If you're in the area, I can give you and your team field tours of places they trained the Apollo and upcoming lunar astronauts, including near the gravel pits and cinder cones, and I would be happy to arrange tours of local science institutions.

Boston, MA is the worst place on earth to learn how to drive, just saying. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 Don’t forget to test them in horrible places with horrible people behind the wheel who don’t have a lot of technical driving skills (unless we’re counting
parallel parking and banging out a very confident U-turn in front of the police station). I’ll do it for free with zero liability.

Wonder if there's an opportunity for Scout to offer a factory coilover setup vs. the standard coil over fixed strut setup that comes on a most new IFS vehicles... I really dislike the disassembly process when replacing/upgrading from factory struts to new aftermarket adjustable or OEM struts... Just something about spring compressors that I feel are only seconds away from unscheduled rapid disassembly...
