Extra, Extra....Read All About It!

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Not sure I agree with this, maybe we're just lucky, but my wife is on her second post-2010 Volvo (currently a 2022 S60 PHEV) and we've had no problems, service tickets, etc. They have been great cars...
I think it’s just that they aren’t the tanks like they were when I learned to drive on a 73 Volvo Station Wagon.

Many of us are here b/c we think Scout has a chance to break that mold and deliver a much more value-oriented & bomb-proof vehicle, with longevity built-in as a feature - particularly if it is easier for owners to take care of their trucks AND they can get great service and support. This is part of the Scout ethos, part of the brand identity, and a competitive advantage - if they deliver.

OEMS's with an intentionally obsolete & cheap mindset are also typically bad for the planet (and owners). They suffer from churn, and continually need to rebuild loyalty. This is expensive for any business. I feel like Volvo intentionally went down this path with Geely Holding Group starting in 2010. They maintained the exterior facade of the tried and true Volvo, then started to underpin vehicles with cheap Chinese parts. This would intentionally create more service tickets. This is no secret, and a tactic employed by many OEM's - Scout will not get sucked into this trap. Volvo just stood out in my mind as one example, and is one vehicle that I will never buy again - any loyalty I once had to the boxy brick$hit house with incredible safety is now gone - even if the cars are still very safe.
Bingo. I have had a Volvo 1986 740 wagon and a 1998 V90 (old 960) wagon. Both tanks. My wife had a 2019 XC90...terrible quality.

We have a 2024 XC90 and its been great with only a few minor issues that were covered by warranty (2nd row passenger window rattled because it wasn't seated properly, quick fix)

My only complaint is really with the software, and while their latest upgrade is a HUGE improvement, it somehow made some of the core features worse.

Vehicles have been disposable since the US government did Cash4Clunkers. but Atleast most companies still make reliable vehicles that last when maintained.

China has super disposable vehicles. We'll start to see how long the EVs last over there shortly in the next few years.

I think we'll see a much more honest opinion of Chinese vehicles in general from places like Europe and Australia than we will from media in China.

Ive been reading about how dealerships(stealerships) are shitting them selves over DTC. If they are so scared why not adjust, and go all online for sales?
The smart ones should hybridize and be the first to do so to get a leg up. And include delivery with 75 miles. No BS. Online comms and delivery to the door

"Aah, that deal was for this specific vehicle and wouldn't you know it, someone just bought it!"
That worked to our advantage on our pilot and we literally stole it out from someone who went to lunch and said they’d be back. Beat them to it by 5 minutes. Was weird having them glaring at us but was also rewarding finally hitting one of those BS deals

It’s weird. When we bought our Miata that happened. Only they gave us each numbers and whoever agreed first won. We won. It was not an ideal way to buy a car in the slightest. And yes that other couple staring at us was really uncomfortable.

The old 240 DL were the heart of Volvo. Super tank, super reliable. My friends mother hit a moose one late night in the back roads of Northern Sweden about 20 years ago.. It ran out from the trees right in front of her. She clipped it's legs and the body went into the windshield. She was luckily not seriously injured. Other than the shattered windshield, just a huge dent in the bumper and hood. She drove it like that for several months until she could repair the body. (Windshield was replaced immediately).

bomb-proof vehicle,

I just read an article yesterday that 20% of dealership owners bring home 1.5 million or more a year. That’s criminal
That’s the dealerships that are no jokes. Set prices, like luxury brands. I had a “aunt” that owned a dealership with her husband, it only made them a couple hundred thousand. And most reviews were about scams they would pull.

Maybe I am being too harsh with my Volvo example. Volvo SW is actually the worst though. And a dealer tried to charge us something like $600 bucks for a SW update that did nothing just so they could try to repair a wiring issue and get the rear lift gate on an XC90 repaired with new stanchions. I asked what I was getting with the SW (hopefully a whole new UI, optimized Polestar performance with my Polestar chip, better voice control). NOPE - I was getting NOTHING was the answer from VOLVO Service. When the XC90 came back, we had new stanchions, but the tailgate still did not operate properly. Their service rates were also very high. Volvo is also why I am a little leary of the air suspension in my Rivian R1T... It was a very unreliable system in the cold for us, which was surprising being that it was supposedly engineered in the arctic. LOL. I'm glad people are happy with their new vehicles though.

*** For the record, I have never paid a DIME for a SW update from Rivian and they have been mind-blowing and seamlessly installed as OTA's. Not sure whose crack pipe Volvo is smoking when it comes to SW updates!

Here's a good summary of the history and status of the DTC sales in South Carolina and mention of Scout Motors. It's also an interesting read for consumers in other states battling the same issues. It's unfortunate that the average consumer is unaware that these franchise laws are firmly seated and supported by auto dealer lobbyists who continue to heavily contribute to our lawmakers' campaign funds.

Surprisingly, the article states "In states that were open to at least one EV manufacturer, franchise dealerships saw their sales revenue increase nearly 80% between 2012 and 2021" based on a report from the NADA itself.

You would think there'd still be a need for storefronts even with DTC, so still a place for "dealerships" - just not the way they currently exist. Which means less money because they won't be able to be sneaky about add-ons, or as was linked above, bait & switch tactics.

It's always about the money.
Tune in for today's episode of "there is always a movie clip"

Fellow South Carolinian, I have less than zero faith in our state legislature. We shall see.
