Key Fob question

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Except that he's right. Only dinosaurs have start/stop buttons. Even GM woke up to reality 😇
It can have it's place, but for the majority of drivers it's just an extra step. However if you watch any TFL video they like to complain about the removal of the button, since they leave the key in the vehicle during the filming, and gets just as annoying as hearing them complain about "the headlights are on the screen" while showing them set to auto by default is if 99% of people would ever actually change them off of auto

Is a start/stop button necessary for a Harvester model?
Not at all. The vehicle will always "start" in EV mode and will fire the engine when it needs to (based on what mode you have it in - stay EV, keep the battery charged, auto, etc.). If the button stays it will not control the engine. Butt in seat, key in car, press brake pedal are all of the safety steps you need to ensure the car is not activated accidentally. Why add an extra step to the process?
What age do you have to be to be a dinosaur? I don’t think I am but maybe I need to reclassify?
Ha! I meant dinosaur manufacturers, not any of you!

Seriously, we've had this discussion a few times now but I still cannot think of a single reason to have a physical button. In the rare times you want to shut the vehicle down while keeping a door open, or staying in the vehicle, there can just be a way to do that on the screen (this is how Tesla does it). Things that you use all the time should be physical buttons, things you do rarely should be on the screen. Needing to power down the car while leaving doors open is a very rare thing - even for YouTubers.

Fairly you can’t but others have expressed interest with valid input. I like it just to know it is a physically request action. I get it isn’t necessary but as SM gen 1 buyers would be nice to have and at first major refresh kill it. But just my opinion and I’m a BEV newly so by gen 2 I’ll likely agree but for now it’s a comfort item

I'd love to have not have to use a fob but so that if my wife or someone else ever drives my Scout (although I hope these occasions are exceedingly rare, have to be ready) , having a fob they can use is far better than "Ok, so download this app and then enter this login and password and then create a user profile..."
Welcome to the community. Good point.

And what do you do in the case of a valet if you don’t have a fob?

even GM has it just a few taps on the screen, or if you want the vehicle to remain on until you decide otherwise there’s a trick for that to. I can get why scout may want the button for first time EV owners, but I really think it’s just a byproduct of when it was designed, but having it as an option would be the best of both worlds for reservation holders, with the mix of people wanting these vehicles

I keep one of my key cards in the wallet. Hopefully it will not be a binary choice with Scout, I doubt it will be. It's pretty easy to hand a key card over to someone, though, so there is definitely good utility for some sort of proximity-based card or method of giving a handshake to the truck.

And what do you do in the case of a valet if you don’t have a fob?
This is why I keep a key card in my wallet.

That said...

The truck could (theoretically) keep driving if you stepped out with your phone-as-a-key and someone else (valet) stepped in to park (same as if you stepped out of a running ICE truck and a valet jumped in). The truck would then send a message to the driver that the key was "not found" once the phone was out of bluetooth range from the truck. in this scenario, and once the truck was put into park, it would not allow you to drive. You would need to either go with the valet to get your truck, or hand over your precious mobiel device. Again, good reasons to EITHER carry a key of some sort, or bring your key FOB when planning to park at a valet, and thus the reason I always keep a key card in my wallet!

Maybe it just says easy on it and is programmable then those who want fart noises can use it for that. Or better yet, transfer stickers with “easy”, “eject”, “afterburner” and random letters so you can make your own. “Beam me up”, “mine”, “launch the nukes”. You know-fun, lighthearted stuff

Too close for missiles, switching to guns....

Tesla lets you program the left scroll wheel "press" action to be whatever you want. I'm fine if it's something like that can be enabled/disabled in software (but getting back to the valet question, how would they know to do that?). My point is that having a dedicated button is a complete waste. The industry is moving away from this at it serves no purpose.

Or how about if I have my kid 3D print a button for you that you can stick onto the wheel? I'm only half kidding. In your ICE today, you get into the car, start the car, buckle seatbelt, press the brake, shift into gear, drive. With the Scout you are only removing the "start the car" step because it doesn't do anything. Everything else still happens exactly the same as your ICE. So if you want to add a step where you press an unnecessary button, you are free to do that. Just know that it serves no purpose in an EV.
