User Interface Tesla vs. Scout vs. VW

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I have to say, I hope the User Interface OS is improved versus the current VW EV interface. The current one, quite frankly, sucks. It’s clear that VW just doesn’t see the point of a smooth OS and user interface experience. I have tried many and the Tesla user interface is a pleasure to use. It’s snappy, quick, clean, etc. We can argue all day whether we need buttons and/or screen but if the User Interface is as bad as VW current just don’t bother. It’s amazing to me the car companies are taking so long to catch on to the obvious. I know, I know, it takes money to have programmers develop an OS and that is not typically in their “wheel house” as they say. Guess what, you’re building a modern EV that will lead you into the future. Include over the air updates and continue to refine the OS over time at a minimum.

Our UX team is made up of unique people from various companies, so our interfaces will likely be a bit different than what's in the ID4.

That said, legacy manufacturers are generally in a tough place trying to catch up. OS's like iOS or Android have been around for 20+ years now with 20 years of constant improvement and millions and millions of users. Even Tesla has a 10+ year advantage over competitors. Legacy manufacturers also relied heavily on outside suppliers to write a lot of the software in multiple modules throughout the car. Bosch ABS brakes, for example, use a small computer module produced by Bosch with software written by Bosch. Now, those systems are moving to central software on a central computer, often being done in-house for the first time.

There will be growing pains during this major transition, but things should get better.

I like the Tesla thought. I recently converted my Scout 800 to EV and the display is everything.

However, what is the point of make it "snappy, quick, and clean" if something simple like opening a glove box has to done through a touch screen. Changing a vent position through a touch screen. Rear seat heater through a touch screen. A simple thing that is overly complicated through something like Tesla UI is better than VW which is more button friendly than it is UI friend.ly?

I guess it depends on what you like. I prefer a blend of the two. But, and I will say "but", I just rented a 2024 GTI. And yes, UI took a little getting used to. But once I knew it, I knew it. And having Android Auto made it a breeze for all the other stuff. I could listen to a podcast and listen, and voice respond to text messages without touching anything. How easy is that? And if I want to simply turn on something I could do it via a button. Radio, Sat/Nav, easy peasy.

Now, I can compare that to my sisters Model 3. The lack of any physical buttons is beyond comprehension. The fact that there are layers and layers of things to swipe through. Tough to do while driving a car. I asked her how many miles are on her car, and she said she didn't know how to find it. Glove open, didn't know how to find it. Open or close a dash vent, I have to touch temp setting for the driver or passenger side, then slide a slider to just adjust a dash vent. So, something I could normally do while driving a car, and could simply be done without having to look at, now has to have my undivided attention.

It is worth mentioning that this is an older topic before the Rivian joint venture announcements. We will be utililzing zonal architecture and software from Rivian in our products.
This is excellent news for everyone... The OTA's and the UI and everything relating to using EV-Specific SW from Rivian is great (I'm biased), BUT I see a lot of benefit using Zonal and see more benefits since it is coming from an EV truck (and not a car).

Even without that it was clear from the presentation, that Scout would be focusing on physical controls, with some quite cool retro looking switchgear.

I don’t mind Rivian zonal architecture and software. Their zonal architecture is the most advanced in the USA. And Rivian software is pretty basic not as confusing as Tesla.

The great thing as I recall from the reveal is while the manual controls are available for the masses (myself included) most of the controls will also be available on the electronic UX side of things so everyone wins. And the right side UX volume dial for the passenger is just a great little design detail.
Win-win for all!
