I grew up with an aerospace engineer dad who had a bar in the living room he turned into a workbench complete with oscilloscope. I thought it was just my house.Yep!
One of the items that made me consider going down was a custom-made oscilloscope. At the time it was made, it outperformed all other oscilloscopes on the market. These days it wouldn’t compare with a readily-accessible and affordable ‘scope.I grew up with an aerospace engineer dad who had a bar in the living room he turned into a workbench complete with oscilloscope. They dragged the Arecibo remains back? That would be so dang dangerous for me. One of my former offices recently had several racks of equipment rescued from the Arecibo Telescope. Much of it hand-made. Fortunately it was a 10-hour round trip for me to pick it up so I couldn’t get to it before they recycled it.
I have a general rule if it sits for three years with intent to use or fix it then gets donated or sold. We are all hoarders by nature -whether we like it or notThis may seem minor to some:
I just took a truckload of old electronics to the hazardous waste recycling center. I had some hard drives from the mid 1990s in there; some desktop and laptop computers from the early 2000s; a TV I was going to repair but then realized I was never going to get around to; and a pile of other things.
I don’t let go of things because they will, some day, be useful again. None of these things were ever going to be useful again. I’m pretty excited for the space recovery.
We needed to make sure all of the Arecibo data were properly archived. That took more time than could be spent on site. While bringing the data racks back, it made sense to also bring other hardware back for proper NSF disposal procedures. NSF had no interest in most of the hardware because it was so old and had a value of $0.00. In fact, it would cost them money to take possession and then do anything with it. Some of it was sent to the Smithsonian for museum consideration. The rest was just not worth keeping in any sense and the team were allowed to dispose of as they saw fit (other than sell for personal gain). Most of NASA/NSF ground hardware is very, very old. When it works you don’t mess with it; you don’t upgrade it; you don’t even sneeze at it. Its only value is to the mission it is currently accomplishing. They dragged the Arecibo remains back?
Sounds like a pretty big deal to me. It’s often bittersweet. This may seem minor to some:

Beautiful. Wish it was warm enough to be in our pool. Open for two more weeks until it gets closed and water is too cold to enjoy. Looks nice, I do the same thing to my 76 F150. That 50 year old paint gets a mirror finish just like that new paint does.12+ hour detail on my parents new telluride.

Haven't done a brake job in ages. Every few months I find a safe place, get up to speed and then brake hard so the friction brakes engage. That cleans off the fine layer of dust the brakes get from disuse. I don't expect to ever need to do a brake job again.View attachment 8715View attachment 8716
My wife had to swap cars with my Mom last week and said Mom’s brakes were shaking really bad too.
So this weekend Mom’s 2013 GX460 got new carbon fiber ceramic pads and drilled and slotted rotors front and rear.
Really wish I was sponsored by Power Stop by this point. I’m going broke with all these brake jobs.
