Special/First Edition Scouts

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Here's one Jamie could get on board with: Scout Community Package
  • Bundle of fan favorite options that were debated and agreed upon within these very forums.
  • Promotes the greater Scout community, Scout can use this as a "we hear you" or "here's a thank you"
  • New customers might be more apt to select a package that was legitimately selected by fans
  • Community members get a discount code on said package
I like your idea!

One thing that Rivian did (that I believe was smart with their Launch Edition) was a limited edition paint. You could opt to pay-up for some more expensive colors, or you could take advantage of the Launch Green color (which was considered a premium paint) at no extra charge. Launch Green proved to be a popular color and therefore Rivian was able to deliver a large number of Launch Edition trucks in "Launch Green"... It was a badge of honor of sorts to have a Launch Edition in Launch Green, and it made the truck distinctive on the road (even though there were other colors) and it gave Launch customers a nice benefit. Other benefits to Rivian was easy recognition of launch vehicles and probably getting better efficiency & pricing out of their paint purchasing. They can shift paint colors on the fly, so there wasn't necessarily a ton of factory efficiency per se (I'm guessing). The Launch Edition trims were basically "loaded" packages, but you could do add-ons for things like cross bars, rubber floor mats, offroad wheels and tires, matching full-sized spare tires, armored underbody shield (additive battery protection), etc. The number of add-ons and upgrades was fairly limited, and some of the add-ons were delivered straight from suppliers following vehicle delivery, which also helped relieve Rivian of some of that burden.

I like this idea.

That’s the double edge sword. They tend to be pricier but the simplicity gets the lines rolling more efficiently and faster scaling but I just can’t justify a $90K vehicle. I’m struggling with my $75K assumption at this point and time 🤣

This is me.

I was in for $50k after incentives. But “launch editions” don’t look like they’ll be anywhere near there.

Heck, even $50k is wayyy more than I’ve ever paid for a vehicle before. So even that was stretch.

And, with economic uncertainty, things get more precarious for me as a consumer, but also scout as a company, and I get that. But this price increase that I’m “pretty sure” is coming, is one of the reasons I’ve been a bit less active around here lately. Maybe I’m mentally preparing myself for being priced out of the conversation from the people with bigger wallets :p.

I’d LOVE for scout to do a “discounted”launch edition. Sort of like what Rivian did, but without the drama where they raised prices for people with preorders for a minute, then walked it back after an uproar from reservation holders. So it’s not really a discount, more of a price freeze for reservation holders, if that helps.

But again, I get it all. It’s not on scout to appease me and fit my budget. So I’m not going to hold it against them if it happens. It might just mean I have to wait more to save, or for used lease return scouts to show up, or for more base models to be offered. And that’s probably fine for me.

This is just me, but I can’t believe they didn’t learn from what happened to Rivian when they launched and the blowback when the price was raised so much. And honestly the cyber truck as well. I would imagine their whole goal is to convert as many reservation holders as possible right out of the gate and they aren’t going to do that if they come out way over what they stated.

The difference (and reality) is that Rivian was forced to give up a bunch of margin when the supply chain stopped and COVID hit. Any business would have raised prices, but it was very hard for all early reservation holders to accept (after waiting for years). Its a tough one for a new company launching the worlds first electric truck to swallow, but they did it, and they made a lot of customers very happy, which went a long way to building trust and brand loyalty while establishing themselves.

But it came with a heavy cost. That’s my fear with the Scouts too

Scout has the advantage of learning from other people's mistakes, so hopefully they can avoid the sort of drama Rivian caused. Scout's claim of "retail prices starting under $60,000" actually seems low to me, but they have not said what you do and don't get for $60K. So I will wait and see what actually happens. I am expecting a high price tag for the launch vehicles, as that is pretty standard in the auto industry. At least with the direct sales model we won't have to deal with dealers, so there won't be an extra $10K dealer markup on top of premium launch pricing.

And we won’t be buying stuff like Simonize and LoJack and PPF unless we want it.

No doubt... A no win situation for sure, but at the end of the day, it was the right decision for a new brand to make, even if they are still fighting to make up for lost ground. With no customers and no history, they weren't going to get away with an Elon Cybertruck "bait and switch" GTM campaign - and that would not be on-brand for Rivian.

I am rooting for both Scout and Rivian to win. Both companies have the rare chance of shaking up an entire industry with higher performing, more innovative, more capable, American-made trucks. Let's hope Scout doesn't face the headwinds that Rivian did at launch, and that we don't see another pandemic. Scout can definitely learn a lot from the past.

Well said. I to think Scout "have the rare chance of shaking up an entire industry"

I guess you could look at what VW has done with the US IDBuzz. Late, overpriced, missed performance numbers, and is selling with a significant dealer markup. But honestly, how many will sell after the initial adopters?
Good thing Scout isn’t a VW then. I know there’s a lot of unknowns but I’m choosing to think positively.

Here's an idea for a Special/Launch edition Scout.

A commemorative Baja Edition done in that amazing terracotta red with the stripes from Sean and Owen Barber's race Terra.

If not a full Baja edition, at least offer that color as a choice and maybe the stripe kit as an option/package.

Totally agree with this assessment of the Buzz, but a minvan built in Germany by VWG has nothing to do with Scout.

Given Scout's independence from VWG, Scout's history as a truck (not a car or minivan), and the fact that it will be built in the USA couldn't make it any more different from the Buzz. Not to mention, not being sold through VWG.
