The scout stake pockets

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Like the “post holes” on the top sides of most “normal” truck beds?
I’ve only ever heard these referred to as “stake pockets”, fwiw.

When I worked landscaping, we mostly used them for attaching tie downs, or temporary taller sides to the bed (using stuff like plywood and 2x4’s or other stakes).

I think they’re used for camper inserts too, but I’ve never dealt with those firsthand.

We always just called them holes honestly, and used them for tie downs and rope, once for a flag pole in a parade. I got “post holes” from Jay Leno, I can’t recall which video but was either scout, Tello, or slate because it was a fresh term in my mind

Sure, totally makes sense. I actually don’t think I have ever heard them called anything in any official media (like a spec sheet or diagram).

It’s totally possible stake pockets was some sort of local/regional slang term.

Was more trying to convey that I’d heard the term than anything else. I’m not claiming ownership or anything here :).

Thanks for clarifying what that meant

I saw this patent awhile back which I though would be nice for utility veichles.

Have seen them used to make pen sides in the beds of trucks. I have done used stake pockets to put bed sides on my flatbed truck (I have 1' sides that are removable, but I use the stake holes to put a 4" rim around the flatbed). Likewise some trailers have them for stakes (very common on bed over trailers, but I have another flatbed with them). I used mine once upon a time to make a rack to haul kayaks - but I was not overly happy with that experiment. It wobbled a lot.

Also saw something similar on quite a few trucks in Mexico - kind of used to keep people from accidentally flying out when they were using trucks as improvised private "taxis". You would see people waiting at buss stops - but then a truck would show up and they would just climb in the bed. I kind of assume that they were a work around for Mexican law that allowed you to haul passengers in the bed of trucks (and people were catching rides with the trucks because they were either quicker or cheaper). But the ones in Mexico were generally metal, and honestly I think they were bolted through the top of the bed rail rather than just being attached through the stake pockets.
