Rear Window

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
We currently have a Ford Bronco and one of the things I dislike the most is the back tailgate. Don’t get me wrong, it works great for off roading, camping, sporting, or whatever. It absolutely sucks when going grocery shopping. So much so, I’d rather take my 2014 MINI Countryman than the Bronco. Ugh. If only the back window rolled down into the tailgate. The rear tire (of course we have a larger than standard spare) is so heavy, when you have to open the gate to put groceries in it takes a lot of work. You have to make sure it is all the way swung open (and stays) so you can lift up the top window. Then you have to reverse all your steps. Looking at the Scout SUV, I’m seeing a potential for three functions to go through in order to open and close the tail gate. This is not practical. If a sliding window won’t work, maybe a better engineered mechanism for the tire swing arm? Just something to consider.
My plan is for grocery trips is to use the frunk. Having seen it in person and sat in it I think it’s going to be plenty big for a lot of my errands.

Remember we will have frunk which may solve a lot of that. The Bronco tailgate was a hassle for things like groceries. But we had the 4 door so groceries went in the back seat

I'm used to having the spare mounted directly to the back door with the glass in the door as well. Simple one-step opening, so I suspect all this messing around with glass/hatch, a carrier AND a tailgate will piss me off. Thankfully, I do plan to use the frunk for grocery runs, etc, so that'll help.

I’m used to a Wrangler so honestly I’m not concerned. I would be more upset if I didn’t have it. I love it!

One idea that I would love to see is a rear window that goes up and down similar to a R2 or 4Runner.
I want to see rear glass that opens such that you don't need to open the full tailgate for small things / quick access.

Before my Land Rover, I had a 2010 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. You could lift just the rear glass open and access the cargo area, which was helpful when you had a hitch rack on and just needed to toss in a bike helmet or a backpack, or grab something out of a full cargo area.

So it flipped up?

I’d love to see that happen but I’m pretty sure Jamie said glass will be fixed in the upper hatch. But would be a great feature. Nice for airflow too

My 2003 Honda Element had a glass portion that lifted up and a tailgate that dropped down, spare tire was inside the floor of the cargo area. That worked pretty well. We now have a 2019 Kia Niro PHEV that has a rear door that lifts up. It's fine, but now that it's about 5 years old, the hydraulics don't lift it up all the way without assistance.

I can imagine it would be handy to be able to have an open window in the back to get stuff without having to undo all the doors, but it seems like you'd have to be kind of tall to reach over the tail gate or work your arms around the spare tire/backpack assembly. I think if it were up to me, I'd love to be able to buy the backpack and the spare tire and be able to interchange them depending on my day (including, taking them off altogether.)

That's the way my Toyota works, but it wouldn't work on the Scout with the spare tire in the way and the rectangular window. In my case, the glass actually has a curve cut out to clear the spare, but that'd look really dumb on a Traveler with a backpack, haha.
It depends on how far the spare is set back and how high it is on the rear.

There are interesting hinge designs that could enable opening if the other dimensions are right.

I believe the rear tire carrier is supposed to be removable - this would allow the Traveler to fit in most garages. If it's not, I probably won't buy it because I want it in my garage.

This is the answer Jamie gave to this question. It didn’t show the answer. If you click on it it takes you there.
