Re-think Headlight Design

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I'm not a huge fan of the 4 array headlight design, looks too similar to the ones Porsche uses. Also kinda looks like a merge of the Porsche and Bronco lights. IMO, its not actually that distinctive/iconic.

I do really like how the DRL blends into the side/parking light and the light bar that wraps around the front/rear grille. Very distinctive.

More than that, I'm concerned about how they are inset and there is a "ledge" in front of each light. This is going to accumulate snow and cover the light. LEDs don't generate much heat so its going to melt off. This being an adventure vehicle, a lot folks who live in and travel to places where it snows are not going to be happy about this.

I'd recommend making the headlights flush so there is no ledge, having a heating element or maybe a washer (though this will be least effective).

    Update:
Case study - Cybertruck with this issue. Scout, hope you’ve got a plan to accout for this: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...cumulate-and-block-the-headlights-230818.html

I couldn't tell you how many times people asked me if I still had my "Bronco"... It felt insulting. I have nothing against Bronco, but confusing the Scout with the Bronco is something I hope doesn't come back. I think Ford did a great job with the appearance on the new Bronco but let the Bronco be a Bronco and let Scout have its own identity.
My brother has a Ramcharger and people call it a Bronco as well. Also, feels insulting.

Okay I used Gemini on a couple of the pictures my husband took at Nats and when we saw the Traveler in Chicago. I do agree that round would make the Scout lean Bronco and I think the grill would need to be different. I don’t think the round lights suit the grill but that just me.

Agreed but I think the rectangular ones like on the ‘80 SII would work.

I think the grill needs to be different if they are going to be round. If anyone wants to use our pictures and see what you come up with feel free.
Yes, but round is the way togo, at least on abase or heritage edition. Agree that grill should be reminiscent of orginal Scout grille maybe?

Wouldn’t that make manufacturing more complicated having to have two different grills and two different headlight designs? Plus wouldn’t Scout want the grille to be immediately recognizable? I think having two different could be confusing to consumers and the round read so much like a Bronco they could be mistaken for a Bronco, as Jamie indicated was the case when SM was in the design process.

Is it any different than the new Land Cruiser having two different front ends, one with round headlights and one with more linear headlights? I'd love to have optional front masks, but with federal testing/approval for headlights, assemblies, etc, it probably doesn't make sense to have too many options. I'd love a retro front with round headlights over the current design, and don't much care if others don't know what I'm driving. My FJ gets mistaken for a Jeep often enough, and even my Supra has been mistaken for a DeLorean a number of times despite it being white! You can't fix stupid, haha.

    What Supra do you have?

Toyota is not a great example (and wallowing pathetically in years of EV denial for their trucks) but that is another story. I see noe reason why Scout should offer two front ends - that would be a marketing 101 blunder, particularly as they look to rebuild consistency with brand awareness and burn the new Scout into the brains of consumers. Having 2 front ends would substantially dilute that effort. I do hope the square lights are optimized for the harshness of ice and snow in cold temp testing. They could still appear the way they do now with a more streamlined bezel, but we'll see what we get in production and with cold weather testing.

I tend to be in the camp that thinks anything that looks like a Bronco is bad - probably even more so now that Ford is floundering.

We also need to remember that Scout skipped the 80's, 90's, 2000's - With decades of missing legacy and a clean slate, any design that gives even the smallest nod to Scout's heritage is good. Lights are so important... Looking forward to seeing the final production pointy end and what testers think when they hit the street.
