R2 Test Drive

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I did a test drive of the R2 yesterday. I am not a reservation holder for Rivian , but I am for a Scout. I was considering the R2 as a stop gap vehicle as we are getting tired of all the reliability issues we are having with our Wrangle 4xE. Full disclosure: I love the ethos of Rivian—a software defined vehicle that can get better as it grows. Ultimately I was meh with the R2 and my wife hated it! Wanted to share in the hopes that Scout can get it right for mass consumers. The good: great tech, great test drive experience, R2 had tons of torque. The bad: no option to turn “off” one pedal driving. My wife wouldn’t even test drive it on a road—I got her to drive it in a parking lot for 2 mins. She got overwhelmed with all the screen views and nearly had a panic attack from sensory overload. She ultimately felt car sick by the end due to the regen/one pedal behavior that even at low is pretty aggressive. She also hated the moonroof—unable to open…even with the back window roll down its wasn’t open air enough. Lastly she didn’t like how low it sat. While ALL of this is personal preference and some can be addressed with future software updates my hope for the scout (and much of this is already confirmed): a blend of screens and knobs, minimal sensory overload potential from the screens (chill mode). Sitting higher and open air cabana roof. While for us the Rivian isn’t a no—it definitely is a not now. I am even more stoked now for the Scout!

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m really curious how tall the Scout will be on a normal setup with 33s.

Every once in a while I have this little thought that says get the EREV with 35s, maintenance be damned.

We are so much closer to being able to test drive our Scouts. Only 4 months or so and two years will have passed. It’s going by fast!

I'm having similar thoughts - similarly my wife doesn't like how Rivians look, and I didn't like the tech when I test drove an R1 recently. I just got a notice that my order slot for an R2 will open in October, so as the date gets closer I'll set up a test drive, but my guess at this point is that I'll ultimately cancel the R2 and wait for the Scout

Do companies ever release how many reservations they get and the percentage that convert?
I've don't recall that data being officially released but you can get pretty close by doing some math.

Scout says they have >160,000 reservations. It will probably go up as they get closer to release, when the configurator opens, etc. They will (hopefully) publish quarterly delivery numbers (this is easier with public companies as those numbers are required to be published). At that point one can simply keep checking Scout's website for when a new order can be expected to be delivered. Once that delivery date comes in meaningfully, you can be reasonably assured that the reservation list has been exhausted. Another way is by hanging out here and when folks start reporting their delivery date being earlier than they were told you can infer that Scout is "catching up" with their backlog. By dividing the reservation backlog by the deliveries to that point you can get a pretty good idea of conversion rate.
