Make steering wheel sportier

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

The steering wheel design needs to look a bit more sporty I think. Currently looks like it came out of my grandpa’s Buick! Like flat bottom but more rounded at top. Needs to be three spoke as well. Two spoke is what I think makes it look like an old man’s car.

Maybe there will be different options for steering wheel design to accommodate personal preferences. I like how the current one looks (minus the stop/start button on it), and I wouldn't really want a sporty looking wheel in a large pickup truck but that's just me.

Welcome to the community! Personally I really like it. I saw the concepts in person back in June and I love dash and steering wheel.

Question, I always have questions, if they don’t change it, and it’s exactly the same as is, will you go through with your purchase or is that one of your deal breakers.

Welcome to the forum and dig in and check things out. And I will humbly disagree on the wheel. Having seen it in person twice now I think it is one of the best wheels I’ve seen in a vehicle. It helps strengthen the linear dash design, looks completely unique and ultimately it’s a truck/SUV not a sports car. But fortunately we are all allowed to express what we like so thanks for sharing your thoughts and again-welcome

This is definitely a deal breaker. Love the dash and buttons but that wheel is ugly and old looking to me. I like the steering wheel on the Rivian truck. That similar design could be tweaked to fit the Scout.

To be honest, I never really thought about the steering wheel. I mean, I know they are right there in front of you, but I really haven't spent much time thinking about them, because I'm usually looking past them, not "at" them.

I guess now that I think about it, it is a bit unusual. I don't know if personally its enough to "bother" me, but I guess I can see your point.

As long as the button layout is good, and it is comfortable, I don't really care. But if they changed it to any other designs I also wouldn't really care either.

Thanks for the answer. Everyone’s design language is so different. I personally am happy with it but I get it. This is why not all cars are the same. Have a great day!!

I’m sorry to hear you wouldn’t buy one of these great vehicles because of that. In person it is one of the nicest wheels but everyone gets to make their own decision

I like the Rivian wheel. Would like it better if it was just a smidge bigger. But I like the feel of it, and having open space in the top 1/2 of the wheel obviously give you visibility to the "instrument cluster" AKA driver screen. I do have questions about driving with a flat "top" wheel and I'm not sure if it will feel as natural with a hand on top of the wheel, which is one way I often find myself driving. I'm perfectly OK with the flat bottom, but unsure about the flat top. The "look" of the wheel itself might be improved with a third spoke in the center /bottom.

Let’s just call it what Kyle Conner calls it; a “square-kle”. I like it but glad it’s not a Tesla yoke.

I've heard the term "squircle" pronounced, skwerkel. The current Scout wheel looks good to me. I think they did a good job of blending the old and the new, as they did with the rest of the vehicle.

That being said, I HATE the on/off switch. It is completely useless in an EV and just adds extra pointless steps to operate the vehicle. There is no need to "start" an EV. Get in (with the key), car moves into in ACC mode (radio works, HVAC works, etc). When you're ready to drive, press the brake pedal (car then turns "on"), shift into R or D, and drive away. When you arrive, put the vehicle in Park, get out of the vehicle, vehicle powers down on its own when you close the door.

We’ve had this disagreement many times.
Your use-case isn’t the only one.
I won’t buy a utility/sport vehicle without a physical Start/Stop button.

Since it's not necessary on EVs I hope they perhaps have both options available, and those who don't want it can have it deleted, and those who do want it can have it included. I'm not sure how much difference that would make in terms of cost/software, I'd hope not too much but that would be a nice scenario since we have people who are very much for and against Start/Stop buttons in EVs.

Does the Harvester version need one? Both of those concepts are Harvesters.

I like the thinking because I want it but can’t see Scout developing two wheels just for that. But time will tell

I'm not certain, my guess would be no, since it would still start up off the regular EV battery initially and then the Harvester part would come on later but I'm happy to be corrected.
Agreed. No change for Harvester. @cyure I thought you were all-in on full BEV? :)

I'm sure it could be disabled in software so that would be my vote if they insist on having it. No need for a second wheel - I will just ignore it.

Oh I am! I’m just curious. Like will my BEV not have it. Or are they all going to have it since the Harvester needs it for some reason and they are only going to make one wheel.

It’s not “needed” in EVs for very simplistic uses of EVs, but I use my truck for working on the ranch and having to deal with the machine shutting itself off automatically would make it so much of a pain that it wouldn’t be worth owning such a truck.

A simple compromise would be keep the button and have a toggle in the UI to turn on/off auto-start.

I wonder if something like that keeping everything on could be achieved using one of those aux buttons by the steering wheel, which would only be one flick of a switch too. Maybe you could even have a sub menu so it could be configured to keep everything on, just climate, or some other combination of things.
