Rivian Rs2 vs Scout Traveler

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

Now that Rivian has announced its new smaller R2 and coming out just a few months before the Traveler, what and how many parts, software, etc will be the same in both? Is VW Group doing this to scare away Scout prospects? Pricing on the R2 is said to be at the $45k range, very similar as the Traveler. Hum??

They are very different sizes. The R2 is approximately Toyota rav4 size, while the traveler is approximately Land Cruiser size.
Rivian has a head start in production, and service
Personally I like the looks of the Scout I’ve got reservation on both and going to see what they both look like closer to production before I decide

Welcome to the community!

I don’t know all the answers to your questions but you are in the right place to hopefully get some of them answered.

I live about 20 minutes from the Rivian plant. Word is They are shutting down production end of this year to get things switched over for making the R2 here as well as their other models. The R2 will be out well before the Scout. R2 is scheduled 2026, from everything I’m reading here in town, and the Scout is end of 2027.

And yes I agree two very different vehicles. The R2 is going to be smaller. The Scout is bigger, closer to the bigger Rivians and definitely with more off road capabilities and options that the Rivian just doesn’t have.

I’m Scout all the way, but I always say, I hope Rivian succeeds, I want a Trader Joe’s and a Costco in town. Ha!

Welcome to the journey!

I agree, love the Scout looks much better. Hoping they make it flat towing as there are very few options for us wanting to tow behind our buses. This would open a whole new segment for Scout also. Thanks for reply.

Rivian is slightly shorter, slightly narrower, and significantly shorter. But it has Rivian DNA in it's headlights-hard pass. I was going to say it looked more like a crossover than an SUV, but then looked at the R3-which is completely crossover.

I like it. If a pile of money fell into my lap, I’d get both. I like that it’s a wee bit smaller than the Scout. Maintaining that I’d love something more Scout 80/800 in size as a small, convenient, and versatile li’l buddy that is maybe a little less Super-Size Golf than the R3/R3X. 🤔 Just impatieeeeeent

Agreed. If money was no object I’d get both. And probably an EV G-wagon, and a Ferrari and caddy ct4 blackwing just to round it out. And a bigger garage too

Oh same. And not just a bigger garage but a garage that was attached to the house and had a glass wall so I could see all my cars from my living room. I would need to win the lottery.

Rivian is making Scout Motors their own Zonal Architecture and Software, which scout has shown at CES. Scout is very different from Rivian, so I would imagine that basically nothing will be shared. Maybe we will see a VW logo, but I wouldn't count on it since Scout has to keep the distance from VW due to the DCT stuff.

VW and Rivian have a joint partnership, which means they can co-develop based on the JV. I would be very surprised if Scout didn't use the JV & its own SW engineers to do its own feature development for their own vehicles. Also, a Scout is a Scout (not a VW), so I would be completely flabbergasted if there was a VW logo anywhere in the infotainments system of a Scout. That would make no sense.

Thats the best part about Joint Ventures. Is that you can collaborate and share expenses of the project.

Yeah.
Even much more closely-aligned subsidiaries like Lexus-sub-Toyota don't use any of their parent branding. Scout isn't going to use VW branding and is going to have to write their own software. Even the "identical" Sync4a software have enough differences between Ford's Mustang and Lightning that I have to relearn a certain amount of what's where whenever I switch vehicles.
