Wheelchair complication: 😄

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scoutsā„¢. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

Hello fellow Scouts! I put in my deposit on the Traveler with Harvester option ooooh, a while ago now. My primary concern was being able to haul my electric wheelchair, which measures 38" by 24" by 17".

It fit easily in the back of my Kia Sorento, my Audi Q7, my Son's Lexus, and my wife's VW Tiguan.

So it LOOKS like the Scout will handle it, no problem at all!

Naturally all in the last 30 days, everything has changed.

I got a cancer diagnosis 1/14. Surgery was 2/19 and seems to have been successful. I'm greatly limited on driving and lifting for the next few weeks, but should be ready to go before the Scout is ready to go!

While I was dealing with that my wife had an infection attack her spine resulting in a below knee amputation and emergency spinal surgery.

So now we find ourselves in a situation where we need to haul TWO wheelchairs at once. Mine for 2 heart attacks + cancer, hers for spine damage, paralysis and amputation.

I'm honestly not sure how we will do that. Hers requires a modification for the amputation, so will be slightly longer than the 38" on mine. 40"? 42"? Something like that.

If we put both chairs side by side, that's 48" wide.

I wish I had a top down diagram of both the rear cargo area and the "frunk" to see how we will make this work.

I really DON'T want to be forced to buy one of those therapeutic travel vans instead of, well, ANYTHING really.

Just because we're stuck with wheelchairs doesn't mean we don't want to get out and do things!

Is it possible to hook up with the Scout design team and see how we will make things work? The folks who did the Pacific Mist version did amazing work, are they willing to work on accessibility with a couple of wheelchair users?

First off - Holy Crap! You and your wife have been through a lot! I pray that you and your wife continue to fight and recover. I simply don’t have the right words!

My father in law has been in a wheel chair for 45 years (helicopter accident). Would the Terra (truck) with a Bruno Lift be a reasonable option for you?

Yeah, it's been a lot to dump on us all at once!

The truck with a lift or a ramp is my backup plan if the SUV option falls through.

The only trick with the truck is we live in Oregon so we need some way to weatherproof the back. We can't leave electric wheelchairs exposed to wind/rain/snow.

I haven't seen any photos of the truck with a canopy on it, but I'm sure that could be done!

Ford and other manufacturers have upfitter and mobility modifier support programs specifically for these kind of modifications. I've asked a couple of times if there's a plan for Scout Motors to have such a program, but haven't heard anything definitive. It would be a shame if Scout doesn't have support for aftermarket modifications of this type.

I can’t imagine they wouldn’t support this.

First, my heart goes out to you and your family. But, I am so glad you are thinking about the future and how to make life work. @cyure do you have any of your measurement photos of the Traveler with the back open? If so, I am sure our friend @jordanlund would appreciate it.

Oh my goodness I don’t know how I missed this thread. First I have to say I am so sorry for all you are going through, but your positive attitude and desire to continue with adventures with your wife is amazing!

Yes I do have a picture of the opening of the Traveler. Take it with a grain of salt however as the inside of the Traveler was dark and the iPhone had a little bit of trouble latching on to a starting and ending point.

That is indeed a huge help! OK, so at 42" it's about 6" short of putting them both in side by side, but if the rear seat folds, or can be removed (and it sounds like even Scout doesn't know that yet) I might be able to get the 48" I need front to back.

Glad it was helpful. Also remember tho that is a concept vehicle and the production models could be different. Also it was like trying to measure a dark hole. So I for sure could be off by a bit. I hope it works for you and your wife and I wish you all the best!

That’s the width. Not sure how deep the cargo area is. But, I would say it’s all but certain the the seats will fold.

I know at some point it was noted a sheet of plywood would fit so that’s 48ā€ but probably overtop of the wheel wells which might place the chairs too height to clear the roof of the travelers

Assuming you chairs are approximately 32-34ā€ x 52ā€-ish it might squeak in with the rear seats folded. There is definitely more depth in the rear than most SUVs that are the 3-rows

That's a possibility, we'll need to see it on the production vehicle. Put a platform on the wheel wells and then stack the chairs on that.

Lifting them, for me, is doable because I need the chair for distances.

Folded, my chair is 38" by 24" by 17". So as long as there's 17" of clearance above the wheel well platform, it should work.
