What was your first car?

Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. First car I ever owned was a 73 Scout II handed down from my dad who bought used in 1984 and had it shipped from Virginia to Guam (US territory in the Pacific). He worked at an International Harvester dealer on island and was able to get parts for it to keep it running. We unfortunately had to sell it when the family decided to move stateside in 1991.

I believe the original color was a light blue with shades of rust but It was repainted gun mental grey with white top, had a working 8 track player (came with the car when dad bought it), CB radio, and tire carrier. Original seats were replaced with Toyota Cressida seats that were an off color blue that totally didn’t match the grey interior of the truck but was what we had.

I remember the speedometer bouncing wildly whenever you went over bumps, had terrible gas mileage, and continued issues with rust. I drove it through my high school years and it was a unique vehicle on island, I can’t recall ever seeing any other Scouts on island but there were a lot of IH light trucks. Have a lot of memories of working on that truck with my dad.

Was super excited to see that Scout was coming back and reserved the Traveler.

My first car was a 1997 Honda Prelude. Back in high school, I was working a near minimum-wage job and refused to cash my paychecks because I didn’t trust myself not to spend the money. Instead, I stacked them in a drawer until HR finally called me in and warned me they’d expire if I didn’t deposit them. At that point, buying a car at 16 was the only thing on my mind.

One night while riding with my brother, I spotted the Prelude. Not long after, it somehow appeared in my driveway. To this day, I’m still not sure how it all worked out, but a loan ended up in my name, the funds were pulled, and I strongly suspect my brother’s signature skills were involved.

Cars and trucks were a big part of my friendships in high school — they were what brought a lot of us together. On graduation night, I was driving home (sober) from a party in the rain when I missed a stop sign hidden by overhanging branches. I was t-boned — ironically — by my old football coach’s son, who had just started driving on his learner’s permit. Luckily, I was fine, but the Prelude wasn’t.

As much as I loved that car, totaling the Prelude is what kick-started my adventure into the off-road world. I picked up a Jeep Cherokee to join friends on the local logging trails. It wasn’t as flashy as the Prelude, but it turned out to be a lot more fun.

or even better, leave the steel rolls out, while the factory is being finished. just like the original scouts.

First post here, though I’ve lurked for awhile (mostly looking at the various renders and photos of the concepts).

First car was a 1985 Honda Accord, dark blue inside, dark blue outside (my parents let me pick the color and I was 8 at the time 😆). Pretty sure it had a white pinstripe - so very ‘80’s! I got the car when I went to college in the mid-90’s, drove it for the next 4 years. Took me mostly between home north of San Francisco and school near Sacramento, but also down to SoCal once or twice. Even made it up the Grapevine on I-5, although the car wasn’t too enthused about it. I don’t remember a ton about that car, I don’t even have any photos of it (the one here is one I just found but exactly the same model/color). But it was a great car for those years, got me where I needed to go and reliable. Except for when the transmission went out and they failed to bolt the engine back in on one side of the block. That was alarming.

I sold it right after college (and heard later a dually rear-ended and totaled it 😞) and replaced it with my first new car I bought myself, a 2000 black w/chrome bumpers Dodge Dakota extended cab which had the full 6’ bed. Loved that truck, drove it all over the place and it was so nice having a pickup. Over the years I didn’t take great care of it, the engine finally gave out in 2015 and it cost way more to fix than it was worth, so off it went to the junkyard in the sky. By then I was working in a job with a company car, and in 2014 we bought my wife a Civic Hybrid (still have it, 139,000 miles and going strong) so I wasn’t driving the truck much anymore anyway. One of many great drives was a trip from the Silicon Valley area down to Edwards AFB for an air show, and back in the same day. That’s when I learned how dumb it is to drive when tired, just as bad as being drunk. I’m still not sure how I made it back in one piece. Last trip I took in it was a drive to Santa Barbara, about an hour from where I lived at the time, with the engine misfiring on one cylinder the whole way. Truck made it out and back, but I took it into the shop right after and never drove it again. It was many months before I came to terms with not having money, nor it being worth it, to fix it and had to get rid of it.

In the 13 years I’ve worked my current job I’ve gone through 9 company cars - 6 Ford Fusions, 2 Toyota Camrys, and now a Nissan Altima. 2 of the Fusions, 1 Camry and the Nissan I got new, the rest were hand-me-downs. I drove a LOT between SoCal and the central coast, eastern Sierra, Mojave desert, border with Mexico, trips to NorCal and Nevada, etc., some years putting well over 30,000 miles on the cars. Now my wife works for the same company and we have a second Altima, for a total of 4 cars between the two of us.

Last November we bought a brand new “eruption green” 2024 Mustang Mach-E premium with the glass roof, first nice car we’ve ever bought and love it! Only the second car my wife and I have bought together, after the Civic. Got me hooked on electric cars - I’d had my heart set on replacing the Civic with a Bronco as I very much want to do my off-roading in a car designed for it. I had one memorable “I’m going this way for fun” drive in a 2018 Toyota Camry on a fire road off Highway 33 in Southern California, no cell phone signal, no human for miles, “road” too narrow to turn around, gravel the size of grapefruit, thought for sure it was going to bottom out and get stuck, but somehow it didn’t… Anyway, I don’t really want to go back to gasoline, and then I stumbled across the Scout, and here I am. Hoping I can afford it once it’s available…

Thanks for the first post and welcome aboard. I was raised in a family of 80’s Hondas including a civic hatchback, a gen 1 CRX and early Honda CRV and then after college my parents finally bought (2) new CRV’s within a year of one another and was the first new cars they had bought in the 22 years I was alive and breathing. My first was the Scout and second was a 78 Buick land yacht with a white Landau roof. Could shove 7 teens in it snug but none compared to the Scout

Ah the land yacht, my dad had an 84' Ford LTD Crown Vic with somewhere around a billion miles that I had/got to drive occasionally. Suspension was shot, electrics were spotty, the power steering was "intermittent", and again no working AC, but the 302 was strong, it had a plush interior, and a kickin' stereo. Loaded it up with friends multiple times when I was "going to work and school only". Fun times.

My grandfather was a Ford mechanic and loved LTDs. He would buy trade ins that he had worked on. He always kept himself and my grandmother in LTDs and Crown Vics.
 
I grew up in a very rural area and learned to drive on a tractor. My dad was a big time car and truck guy so i inherited the disease too. I got to tinker with old Dodge trucks, IH Travelall, 57 Chevy, 64 1/2 mustang and more TVs I can’t remember. When it was close to time for me to get my license in 1994 I went to a old car auction and fell in love with a 1972 Dodge Dart Swinger. It was a quintessential old lady’s car with very low miles and zero rust. I was able to convince my father to buy it for $1200 on a work and good grades repay arrangement. I learned how to rebuild a carburetor and all the other old car stuff that my kids will never understand. Especially that drum brakes all around require paying attention and tailgating. It got a full repay in Viper Red. I thought that was rad as the Viper had just come out. Bench seat front and back! So many good memories. This is not my car, but it looked very similar.
