Spare tire carrier - other locations?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

Might Traveler offer means to carry spare underbody, like Terra? Or perhaps mounted/standing to one side inside the vehicle?

I'd prefer to completely remove the swinging-gate carrier and have the split tailgate unobstructed.
Per other threads we’ve clarified the carrier is an option. Standard tires will be mounted under. Speculating the 35’s option will force the carrier.

Ordered a 92 Bronco (full sized) while I was overseas & picked it up in Texas

Only problem with the external spare tire was some A hole stole the cover while we were at the zoo in San Diego. Loved the Bronco but at altitude in the San Juan’s the 351W was worthless, even had to turn around on Imogene pass as it could not get out of its way

Wish we had kept it……

Has it been said yet if there will be an option for a spare carrier that would fit a 37? The spare shown during the reveal looks to be made for the 35, not much more room for a bigger tire.
37’s will fit on vehicle but nothing said at the event. My guess looking at it at the reveal event is no -UNLESS the mounting hardware inside the “sleeve” of carrier can be moved up to allow the larger diameter but I suspect not

That’s my guess too. Curious if the carrier will be available for purchase separately or if it needs to be selected at the time of ordering. Hopefully the design will be easy enough for aftermarket to design a carrier for a 37.

For the Traveler, I think there should be 3 potential locations.

1) Under the body, likely only on the BEV version, and for tires <35in.
2) the optional external tire mount (removeable easily)
3) inside the vehicle, ala my ZJ. For those of us that want a spare tire, but don't want the extra length of the tire carrier (I couldn't park in the garage with the spare tire carrier on).

I'd keep the spare tire inside because of parking length, but on long road trips it would be nice to have the option to put on the spare tire carrier and reclaim more of that storage space.

This is what is in the back of my ZJ, for reference. Its got a big bolt that comes out of the side of the driver side of the storage area (its on a hinge, so it lays flat when not in use), that it uses to secure it, and it doesn't move around.

20 years ago I had the pleasure of meeting François Castang several times as we kept doing the same vintage car rallies together. We had an Austin Healey while he had a fantastic 1927/1928 Chrysler he raced. Anyway he was the key man behind the XJ and ZJ, the latter he started working on when it was still AMC in 1986.

Back to the spare tire. So at the time were kept running into each other the ZJ's replacement (WJ) had come out. I asked him his thoughts and he hated it, specifically because of the spare tire placement under the cargo floor. He was adamant about having the spare in the trunk space because it allowed for an overall lower/level rear end. On the WJ however they designed the car to lift the end way up so they could stick that spare underneath. I don't think it's that bad but he hated it, he also hated the DaimlerChrysler merger which was when he exited the business. Anyway there's some history on that spare for you.

Ooh, thats cool to know. Thanks for that :).

Yeah, the spare tire has to fit somewhere. And each option has its downsides. Thats why I'm hoping for more than one location, so we can pick which set of pros/cons that work best for us :).

Ahhhh.... A lover of the Alpine Loop? One of my favorite stomping grounds. So many side trails. So much beauty. America's Little Switzerland. I know what you mean about altitude. At the tops of the San Juan Mountains I have come to call my 1980 Diesel Scout "Rolling Cloud!" She still does it, but I can't be in a hurry! (*grin*)

You will appreciate this since you know the area. I was working my way down one of the narrow trails, carved into the side of the solid rock cliffs and turning a corner I came face-to-face with a guy who had dropped his back tire over the side. He was out in the road holding onto a rope to ensure it didn't creep over the 1,000 foot drop. I'm not sure what he thought he was going to do with a rope, but there he was. So I have everyone get out of my vehicle and I parked in an area I hoped was safe for my Scout and ran out a wench cable. Then standing outside of my vehicle, in case both got pulled to their deaths, and pulled him back onto the trail.

I've often wondered if that was smart or stupid. It turned out well and I could not have driven away. It's funny, I have never had to use my winch to get myself out of a bad spot, but I have used it for many rescues. Maybe we'll meet on Imogene, Engineer or Cinnamon in our new Scouts!

Isn’t the gas generator located in the front just behind the firewall? I figured that is why they placed the fuel door on the front quarter panel.
Here's a good picture of what they're planning. The fuel filler is up front but you can see that the Traveler (generator) sits underneath in the back. Lots of talk on here about what type and size of motor will likely be used. Nothing official yet that I've seen.
