It just dawned on me that if Scout Motors chooses to use a 4-cylinder boxer motor (nice, flat long-lasting motor) in the Traveler then Volkswagon seems to have re-released the Bug! (just making a joke) But put a Baja body on this and LOOK OUT!

That's where it is in my 1980 Scout II. I would prefer this. My wife would prefer to not have it inside. She represents most buyers I would guess. I see the vehicle as more of a rugged off-road adventure vehicle and she she's it more as a nice luxury vehicle. Inside fits with rugged, outside preserves the luxury.
If you're planning on using this off-road at all, you're going to want the tire carrier. It makes changing tires much easier especially in the mud and allows a lot more cargo space.
Not to burst your bubble, but you would be extremely hard pressed to get a full-sized truck spare to fit into any frunk, and there are some large frunks out there.
The issue which would need engineered (think this was mentioned a while ago) is on a head on collision that tire better be anchored and designed to blow out and not through the firewall panel. That tire and RIM become a ballistic missile for the front passenger.
You might be right, but keep in mind that I've been stomping through the mud for more than 35 years with multiple Scout IIs all with tires mounted inside and that's my go-to preference. However, I also don't haul much cargo when I'm off-road. If I did, I would love to have the extra space.
Agreed... I guess in an EV truck you could have ballistic missiles coming at you from the back or the front! Just the sheer size diameter and circumference plus the width of a wheel and tire (and weight) also make it super challenging for a frunk.
It seems to me like somebody on here should start designing an aftermarket interior wheel mount. I do wonder with a 35 or 37 if it would even fit behind the second row seat
Now that is an EXTREMELY good reason to put it on the back. I have never run larger than 31s. Even 35s might be just way too monster big to realistically put inside. Good point!
I suspect so but I do think somebody should determine if a vertical mount/rack in the inside rear would work.
I love the frunk for storage but I do wonder what happens in a front end collision if you are carry “lose” objects with weight or corners that could blow through the fire wall.
I’m still going with rear carrier but I have enough room in garage and I don’t off road. Having seen it at the reveal I don’t think I’d want the traveler without the rear spare carrier based on what we saw there.

I drove my parents hand me down Scout as a dumb 16-17 year old so I have done plenty ?. Lancaster county PA isn’t exactly the Mecca of off-roading. I know there are places but after the Scout I never had the desire to build and mod.
Years ago while at a tournament in Phoenix we went to Sedona and did a pink Jeep tour up into the read rocks. Was an amazing experience. Tried to get my wife to get a Jeep but she wasn’t willing to spend the money (corporate banker and bread winner-you do the math ?)
Had the Bronco with intents to build I’d it a bit because my daughter was down for it then too many issues so traded in the Bronco. Hoping the Traveler will be the opportunity but nothing hard core. I’d rather head to Delaware to meet a buddy of mine and put it on the beach but time will tell.
Ha ha ha! Your wife's "spidy senses" told her that a Jeep was not the way to go. Good for her. Get the Traveler, set her up with wine and cheese in the center console. Then when she's enjoying her favorite music take a wrong turn and head for MT, UT, CO, WY, WA, OR or CA. (Come to think of it skip CA! (*grin*))
Her sister lives on a 6000 acre ranch in MT so that would be a good cross country trip. (She’s a beer kind of lady-and that is great with me!?
First trip is from Blythewood (1/2 hour north of there is Lancaster SC) then home to Lancaster PA. Figured that would be a corny, memorable first road trip. Hoping for city signs so I can get pics in both. Thinking the Traveler may start a new travel campaign to visit as many Lancaster’s as I can across the US. Maybe not all in one trip but think that might be a different travel plan!
My ZJ will fit a 31” behind the second row, and it’s a solid 14” in shorter in OAL than the traveler.
I’d imagine a 32-33in tire would fit pretty easily, a 35” seems like a strong maybe, but I’d imagine a 37” would be pushing it.
Saw this article on the new Honda Passport. It now has inside option for spare. Just posting this pic so everyone knows how much space a tire inside is gonna chew up. Obviously it’s narrower than the traveler will be but was just shocked to see how much space. I’m pretty sure the passport isn’t running 32’s/33’s either
I got to thinking…a rear cargo area mounted spare tire would be in danger of breaking loose and becoming a missile during a front-end collision as well, no? The only difference being it’s coming at the back of your head and it’s already inside the vehicle. Would just need to make sure that cargo area mount is ROBUST.
