Re-think Headlight Design

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

I'm not a huge fan of the 4 array headlight design, looks too similar to the ones Porsche uses. Also kinda looks like a merge of the Porsche and Bronco lights. IMO, its not actually that distinctive/iconic.

I do really like how the DRL blends into the side/parking light and the light bar that wraps around the front/rear grille. Very distinctive.

More than that, I'm concerned about how they are inset and there is a "ledge" in front of each light. This is going to accumulate snow and cover the light. LEDs don't generate much heat so its going to melt off. This being an adventure vehicle, a lot folks who live in and travel to places where it snows are not going to be happy about this.

I'd recommend making the headlights flush so there is no ledge, having a heating element or maybe a washer (though this will be least effective).

    Update:
Case study - Cybertruck with this issue. Scout, hope you’ve got a plan to accout for this: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...cumulate-and-block-the-headlights-230818.html

I would much prefer round headlights like the original scouts had.

I agree with the headlight concerns. Hyundai has already capitalized on the Porsche look, and it was never tough enough for a Scout. Go hi tech but round - retro modern and aggressive. Maybe a big circle and a second slightly smaller adjacent or overlapping one for high beams or fog. Or satisfy your rectangle and round fans at the same time by using rectangle shape overall (nice nod to the 90s Land Cruiser) with inset circles.
I am late to this community posting thing and I’ve commented a couple of times now about round headlights of which I’m a huge fan. I just stumbled upon this post above. great thinking Jayhawk. I totally love your thinking outside the box ha ha no pun intended. It would bring everyone together!

    Welcome to the community!
Thank you. Had no idea so many people cared as much as I do about design decisions such as round headlights for which member Jayhawke has a great take on, versus, well I’ll try to be nice, ‘the futuristic look’ of the slits, etc..

Oh we all care a lot about a lot of things. My ride or die is that tire carrier and glass roof. I have to have both of those things. Absolutely no questions asked.

I don’t think it’s trying to be nice or squash your wants. I gave up on those bandwagons 8 months ago. But it’s been clearly stated by SM design team and Jamie that round isn’t happening. So I just hope as I said that an aftermarket company creates an amazing round replacement. 3 weeks ago I followed a (guessing 2018) hands according to with twilight replacements that looked like they came from an Infiniti and they were amazing. Completely changed the look without changing the housing shape so I think if the right person designs it -it may be great. I just know having been here it’s been clearly stated multiple times so trying to be realistic as well. If enough people wish for aftermarket’s perhaps an aftermarket designer is on here, will see the need and will create an option

I got to thinking about this more, and the current front mask could almost work for me, there's just too much black. Without changing the lights or layout, throwing some silver (or God-forbid chrome) trim in the mix could give me some later Scout II vibes in the center section to give me more of a connection with Scouts of yore without invoking anything Bronco. Thoughts on my 90-second Microsoft Paint experiment?

Looks good with this paint - but I also like the Scout version. Well done.

I don’t know which one I like better yet. Maybe it could be this and then the original is a blacked out option.

This does a great job of echoing the last SII.
