Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie?

It’s not the Christmas season in this house until we watch Die Hard and see Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi Plaza. It’s on every year when we decorate the tree. I know it’s not Thanksgiving yet but my kids work in health care and this was the day they were off so it was hot cocoa and watching Die Hard as we decorate the tree tonight.

Now for all you skeptics here are just a few reasons why Die Hard is a Christmas movie:

1. It takes place on Christmas Eve
2. At a Christmas party
3. With lots of Christmas music throughout
4. His wife is named Holly
5. Hans Gruber and the terrorists are there for money. Like the mean banker in it’s a Wonderful Life
6. The dead terrorist in the elevator is wearing a Santa hat and his shirt says HO HO HO…
7. He uses Christmas package tape to help take out the bad guys
8. It “snows” at the end

Need I say more.

Normally I wait but with the kids schedules we aren’t even eating Thanksgiving dinner until Sunday the 30th and that too long to wait to put up the tree and they were both available today so today it was!

And yes in addition to the traditional movies that we know are Christmas movies I also include:

1. Nightmare before Christmas
2. Gremlins
3. Die Hard 2

Any others I’m missing?

I never caught on to this. I don't know if I would call that a good justification for Die Hard being a Christmas movie, but it's a nice nod to the spirit of the movie.

BTW - I do consider Die Hard to be a Christmas movie. It just isn't a Hallmark Christmas movie. :LOL:

I happen to have an exact and factual answer to this enduring question. I know Joel Silver, the producer of Die Hard. I asked this exact question to him and he confirmed that YES, it is a Christmas movie.
