Does the Harvester option allow for the battery to be charged by the gas engine alone? So if you were unable to plug the vehicle in could the gas engine charge the battery to power the vehicle?

Yes, that’s the Harvesters job so to speak. The Harvester generator will not turn the wheels, it will charge the battery.

Not sure if you're into reading, but the Thrawn Trillogy by Timothy Zahn ( I have softback, and hardcover editions of this, and am sooo sad they didn't make this episodes 7/8/9), and "I Jedi" by Michael A Stackpole (If you read the X wing series, and the Jedi Academy series) are great.

Funny fact.
When my wife and I were engaged/newly married, I always joked with her/our other friends that "whenever we have kids, I don't want some girly diaper bag... I want a cool one, like the Yoda Backpack" (the one that thinkgeek made).
So... one day I got a gift from my wife. It was the yoda backpack. She was telling me she was pregnant
.I wear it to church every week as my kids snacks/crayons/etc bag (not in diapers anymore, but still... granola bars, pens, rubics cubes, etc). And so now to many there, I'm "yoda backpack guy".

I currently drive a plug-in hybrid and is the only way to go EV! Can drive all day on battery around town then go long distance with no battery range anxiety. It isn't hampered by extremely cold or hot weather. Get's excellent MPG without sacrificing power. Tell all my friends once they drive electric, they'll never go back!!!

We've had a PHEV for almost 4 years now, and we've loved it. It really is a great onramp to what driving an electric vehicle could be like.
One 10,000 mile stint, we averaged 226mpg!
(of course that was the year with no big road trips. Other years we've managed more like 60-80mpg).
We've also now purchased a BEV, and now we're trying to decide if we're brave enough to road trip it
. I'm sure you all will hear about it eventually .The EREV really does seem like the next evolution of a PHEV. And honestly what they had done first (I had conversations with a buddy who works in the industry about this over a decade ago, saying "why can't we do it more like trains, where the engines just provide electricity").
