Extra, Extra....Read All About It!

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Starting Now, Minnesota EV Owners Will Pay Double Fees, And That’s Just The Beginning.
Let us hope this is not the sign of the times. If the US was still moving ahead on the eventual elimination of internal combustion engine, and building out electric vehicle infrastructure I could see states doing something like this. However, this is not whats happening. This seems more like a fine from the drug dealers behind the world’s addiction to oil.

I don't hate the policy. There has to be a way to continue funding road infrastructure maintenance and improvements. Policies such as this one will likely roll out in other states in the coming years. As time goes on these policies will be revised and refined. Heck registering an EV in PA is a 400 dollar affair for a 2 year renewal...

IMO, they need someone willing to say, “no” to their excessively-long videos.
They are too long, I agree. I put them on my second screen and let them run in the background while doing other work, really only tune into the stops and the moments where they encounter issues. Since EVs are rolling computers it has been interesting to see the issues the teams encountered so far and how good or poor the charging stops have been. Heck the Escalade IQ took down an Alpitronic HYC400 dispenser... ( vehicle and charger ramped up and then everything went dark like it blew out a fuse) How the heck did it take out one of those...

Do wish they condensed the road trip episodes more to be max 1 hour... Hopefully they do a final video that takes all the information learned and they make it 1 hour, recapping all the issues encountered.

People don't like to admit the fact that EVs are far heavier vehicles than their gas powered counterparts. The F150 as an example weighs 4000-5000 pounds while the Lightning starts at over 6000 pounds and goes up to 6800. That's 25-35% heavier for the EV. The Hummer weighs 9000-9700 pounds. All that weight adds a lot to road wear and EV owners aren't contributing to the funds by paying the gas text.

Now that can lead in to a discussion about our taxes and where the money actually goes, but hopefully that is avoided for sake of this thread remaining valuable.

Registration fee seems arbitrary though. To me a smarter way to move forward would be to get rid of the gas tax all together and to come up with a year end tax for all vehicles based on weight and mileage driven.

RJs whole marketing of Rivian is the way to do it. No politics involved. And if you don't want a Rivian you don't have to buy it. And Rivian is heading for a big year this year.
Maybe. They still have many, many hurdles to cross. They are losing a lot of money on every vehicle produced. The quality still isn't there, and if you are the FB Rivian group, you can see the new Rivian owners act just like Tesla owners, i.e. they claim there cars are the greatest ever, and they have zero defects. All the while, attacking those who have problems. I sure those types don't hijack Scout. Anyway, what is RJ's plan to change that, just beyond offering a cheaper(if 60k is cheap) EV SUV? I think it's all hype to get the stock to move, and to get the investors off his back. At the end of the day, a Rivian is still a Rivian, and it will be a boutique brand.

And really - those prices seem on par with ICE registrations in other states...

It's certainly a small volume seller currently with the two current models starting at high price points. But and this is a big but... If the R2 can come in at $45,000 and offer decent range (I'm thinking base range of 280 miles?) then they have the potential for a very high volume seller. They better get their QC issues sorted for this new R2 though... I hope they nail it.

My town does too.

Yeah. Most of the ID.4 uses capacitive, which is very annoying to use, particularly because they are not backlit so a lot of times at night you end up stabbing at the dash turning things off and on until you find the right thing.

This sounds a little bonkers, but I’m actually thinking of adding some “sticker bumps” that are used for the visually impaired to help me find the buttons in the dark. I’m not sure if they would work with capacitive surfaces but it’s worth a try.

I think VW learned its lesson on this.
Amazes me they don’t backlight them in some way. With all the flexibility LED’s offer and as cheap as they are another $3 would have been worth every penny

Yeah-pricey enough here in PA with so many taxes and the highest tolls for turnpike in the country which apparently is also supposed to support road improements. My hang up is now the current admin is rolling back CAFE standards so add some tax to the ICE vehicles as well to offset their pollution etc… which we will need to eventually be paying for as well as clean up and if not ahead-perhaps at that point-the ICE drivers can pay to cover those costs. They should establish a set fee for all behicles in categories as part of sales tax. Passenger cars, passenger trucks, dualies, then commercial.

I’ve thought this would seem to be a fair way to do it as well. Remove gas tax and charge the same method for all vehicles. I don’t like the argument for weight on EVs because although my Tesla Model 3 is heavier than say a Toyota Corolla, it is still much lighter than a regular ICE F-150s or Suburban etc. and there are a lot more of those on the road not paying a higher tax for being heavier.

My Bolt EUV weighs 3,680lbs
our Volt 3,785lbs
Chrysler 200 3,402lbs
Buick Lacrosse weighs 3,837lbs

The BEV isn’t even the heaviest car in my driveway, so when people say “EVs are heavier” they must think ICE cars weigh 2k max.

And with Registrations being due
BEV $285
PIHEV $150
ICE $50

IMO, a reasonable fee/tax would be based on MSRP, curb weight, and vehicle area (total length * total width).

Fossil fuels are already heavily subsidized by the public, beginning with the insanely low lease costs for mineral extraction rights on public lands.

QC is something that startups struggle with tesla still struggles with it. Scout will probably be okay since they have the VW experience backing.
