Exclusive: Hyundai Mobis in talks with Volkswagen-owned Scout on multibillion-dollar deal

Is this a trustworthy source?

Google Gemini says yes:
If you are looking for accurate information on a multibillion-dollar corporate deal, this is a top-tier source. You are getting reporting from journalists who are physically on the ground in Seoul and have direct access to the companies mentioned. Just be aware that its editorial tone is generally favorable toward industrial growth and corporate expansion.

Summary

Hyundai Mobis is in talks with Volkswagen-owned Scout Motors for a multibillion-dollar EV battery system deal that could start deliveries in early 2028.

Why it matters: The deal would be Hyundai Mobis’s first large-scale order from a North American automaker and could help the supplier reduce heavy reliance on Hyundai and Kia (about 60% of sales).

The big picture: Hyundai Mobis has been pushing to win more “noncaptive” (non-affiliate) business, after landing major EV-component contracts with Mercedes-Benz (2022) and Volkswagen (2023).

What’s happening:
  • Talks center on supplying battery system assemblies (BSA)—a core EV component integrating the battery pack, management system, and key electronic modules.
  • Sources say BSA supply to Scout is targeted to begin in early 2028; the order could be Hyundai Mobis’s largest single overseas order.
  • If finalized, Hyundai Mobis is expected to build its own battery system plant in South Carolina, near Scout’s manufacturing site.
  • Hyundai Mobis declined to confirm, citing client confidentiality clauses.
What’s next: Scout plans to launch the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup in late 2027 or early 2028; refundable preorders have surpassed 50,000.

Welcome to the forum. We are getting feedback from Jamie who runs the forum via Scout Motors. Based on your info it seems realistic but we rely on him for clarification when he has management’s approval to share

I’m not entirely sure what to think about that potential deal. I was under the impression the batteries were being made at another plant thru Scout. Didn’t Hyundai have problems with their batteries catching fire or something like that or am I remembering this incorrectly.

Hi, I asked @Jamie@ScoutMotors in another thread if we could get clarification on whether this is accurate or not. He will answer us if he has information he can share.

If I’m reading the article right, the component is not the batteries themselves but the system that assembles them into one integrated pack.

Interesting find there. I'm sure we'll learn more in the near future as to whether it's correct or not.

Yeah, I read it the same way:

It sounds like they're delivering the BSA (Battery System Assembly) which from my read is:
- the Battery Pack: The actual energy storage component.
- the Battery Management System (BMS): The computer/electronics that monitor the battery's health, temperature, and charging.
- key Electronic Modules: Additional electrical components required to manage the flow of power

I am guessing and curious what others think, does that mean?:
PowerCo (VW subsidiary in Canada) makes the cells -> ships them to South Carolina -> Hyundai Mobis puts them into the final box (BSA) -> delivers them to the Scout

From what I've read, Hyundai Mobis has a deal with VW spain for VW EVs in Europe. That's sounds like good news, some history and maybe the kinks have been worked out.

After watching Chris Benjamin on The InEVitable podcast I also listened to their episode on battery recycling, manufacturing, technology, and critical minerals. This was a very educational episode for anyone reading this Hyundai Mobis report and trying to figure out the dynamics of the EV battery market, manufacturing, American competitiveness, etc.
