Combustion Engine

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

I suggest you consider a version with combustion engine option. You are definitely missing the mark going without a version using 100% combustion engine power. The EV market may have its place but consider the roots of this vehicle and the reason it would be used. There may be the buyer who wants a street queen but the heart and blood of this vehicle is the road less travelled; off road cross country adventure where there will be no EV charger. Take a que from the loss GM is taking with the Hummer.

This will go down as one of the greatest marketing blunders next to the Delorean.

Perhaps this vehicle just isn’t meant to be for you! Instead of starting day one telling SM how they will fail why not spend a week reading threads and educate yourself like many of us did OR-just be you but like so many others who tried-we will make a few comments then ignore your posts. Messenger or not, you can educate yourself first like many others, including myself did and realize there are many who do want EV with or without range extender. If you have specific fears and can be honest and admit them there are a number of folks on the forum who will gladly help you understand info and explain the benefits of EV. Many people on here do long road trips, like you and they are fully onboard with EV. It’s about educating one’s self about the advantages of EV.

EV market is struggling. V8 or diesel option is necessary. No one buys a scout for environmental or economy reasons. Don’t turn it into a ‘car’. Leave it an international harvester scout.
Why bother joining then!. This isn’t the forum for you. Troll somewhere else. 80,000+ reservations says otherwise.

Nobody sits around reminiscing about the old Scouts with topics like-“remember how great they were because of the gas engine” or diesel is what made those couple model years better than all the others”. Rarely do people talk about the engine sizes, other than to say “I had this V8 or this half block in my Scout”.
-They talk about Simplicity
-They talk about do anything/go anywhere
-They talk about Scout/IH being innovators
-Scouts being/going first
-They talk about memories of family road trips
-They recall farmworking/plowing and other utility based things done with their Scouts
-They talk about being in the “wilderness” be it camping, rock climbing, or other adventures
-They talk about lifestyle living and interacting with other friends and families.
To summarize, IH Scouts are remembered as connection machines, memory makers, adventure/outdoors vehicles who innovated the modern day SUV. And I’ll be damned-thus far that’s exactly what Scout Motors is creating. And SM was innovative enough to realize some parts of this country and certain pockets of activity will struggle with pure EV, so they offered up the Harvester. It will have an engine, you get to go to the gas station regularly, have your hands smell like petrol products and have to change oil, probably get emissions testing and still deal with more maintenance-BUT-SM has chosen to be a 50 state vehicle because they are new and have no concept restrictions-which is what Innovators do. Kudos to SM for reviving an icon - without the need for a V-8 or diesel gas! Or solid state batteries.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Also, says you. The only reason I’m buying a Scout is because it’s an EV that will get me from point A to B like a sedan would without being a boring-ass lame-o sedan. They have their place and purpose. I don’t want one. I have limb problems in my middle age and want something that rides a wee higher, doesn’t suck, ideally doesn’t further destroy the planet long-term, and oh look also plays into my sentimentality and nostalgia for a simpler time. I respectfully disagree: this is exactly the kind of thing that a person who loves and respects the very ground we walk on wants to own.

Welcome to the community but it sounds like this may not be the vehicle for you. If you want gas reserve the harvester but with all the billions invested to date they aren’t going to about-face and take away the EV component, especially with 80,000+ reservations. Also this isn’t an IH Scout. This is a Scout Traveler or Terra. They don’t own the IH name. If you want a IH gas or diesel Scout there are vintage Scouts out there that are gorgeous restored. Good luck.

Says who it’s not the vehicle for me? I have reserved one of each. Rather than condemn me for an opinion why don’t you post something meaningful?

So, you reserved one of each vehicle. Are you going for EREV or EV? Are you going for a match set or mixing it up? One for off-roading one for your daily driver? Just curious about your use. Scout is a great choice either way.

Sorry I thot this was a forum. I think I have the right to voice an opinion. Didn’t mean to rain on your private club parade.
You absolutely do. As do the rest of us. I just figured when you said international Harvester Scout you were on the wrong page. I figured since you mentioned V-8 you haven’t read anywhere that the Scout (Traveller and Terra) by Scout Motors is an EV. Since you mentioned Diesel you missed that SM is supported under VWAG and since they dealt with Diesel-gate which has been discussed a lot on the forum that you hadn’t found those threads. And since EV sales are technically increasing and ICE are declining that perhaps you have been mis-informed about EV’s. But as noted, we all have opinions on lots of posts. There are 1000’s of great posts and threads on this forum and I enjoy the majority of opinions offered on the forum

I’ll be honest, I’d much rather prefer an ICE Scout, but that’s not happening. There’s been a lot of good discussion here, and the Harvester package is really intriguing to me. I’m not ready to go full EV yet, but there are some perks to the future Scout that have me excited.

I must have misunderstood your post. Glad to have you aboard. Are you planning on purchasing two? If so, great. If not, it’s not necessary to reserve two if you aren’t quite sure which one you want. You aren’t locked into a model or BEV or EREV until you actually place your order. I have reserved a Traveler Harvester but I’m thinking I might switch to the EV, but there’s no need to change my reservation. I can order either one when the time comes. There’s 2-1/2 years of posts on here. Lots of information. Enjoy!

I guess if you ask for the perspective of those that saw the advantages of an EV truck, took a risk early and bought an R1T or Lightening (for example), you probably won't find a single owner here that wants to go back to ICE - ever. Pretty compelling.

No one buys a scout for environmental or economy reasons.
Well, that would be wrong too, since I know I did.

Just to clarify for others who may read this, the EV market is not in fact "struggling". The EV market reached yet another record-high quarter of sales as it has been for the past several years now. The EV market is healthier and larger than it has ever been and continues to grow. There is no data that supports the "EV market is struggling" position. It's simply wrong.

I can't speak for Canada but if there was no $7,500 incentive for leasing, USA EV sales would likely not be so rosy. There have been insane lease deals. There will be a glut of used EVS in 2 to 3 years. Whether or not those owners continue with EV's will be interesting.
