Bench Seat vs Standard

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

By “regular seat” I assume you mean the front row “captains chairs” and console?

Assuming the bench seat has a fold down console that is half decent, I’m 99% sure I’ll be going with the bench seat. The extra seat gives a ton more flexibility, without much downside.

My parents have a crew cab truck with a front bench, and as my wife and I have 2 kids, it means our whole family can sit in the truck. It makes things much easier for the airport pickup/dropoffs. And we’ve even done multi-hour trips with myself in the front middle (as a 6’1” man) without problem.

Conversely, when my parents fly here, we have to take two vehicles everywhere, as we have two 5 passenger vehicles. Which gets old fast.

I have nothing against captains chairs. But the extra utility of the bench is very valuable to me.

I will have to sit in it and see. Anything I'm going to sit in for that long has to be very comfortable. I like the idea of the bench seat but don't remember them being all that nice for extended periods of time

I do mean the console/captain's seats.

For myself, I like having the console in the middle. It's always good to have places to put things! Being a crew cab, I can haul people around if need be and that works for my situation.

Oh, for sure, I appreciate a console as well.

FWIW, didn't they confirm that they would have some sort of fold down console in the bench seat?

Not saying it will look like this, but this is what a 2024 Silverado bench seat looks like, with the middle seat folded down into a console. I'd expect something vaguely like this, just... "Scout-ified" (aka, more appealing looking :D).

If that is not available, I'd have a much harder decision to make.

100% this. If it doesn’t offer some center storage, cup holders and an alternative location for wireless charging / phone storage, it will deter me for sure. Honestly I at this point, I would be very surprised if Scout didn’t deliver in this aspect considering all the other details.

I had a Silverado with this configuration for the bench (prior to my Rivian). It worked great... Until you flipped it up and forgot you had some little stuff sitting in the cup holders or the compartment. Everything inside the compartment flies all over the place when you flip it up too. Just some trade-offs, and something to think about. I think you need to have good cup holders on the "flip up" and a comfortable arm rest and place for your phone, but the inside could be better engineered (perhaps with optional enclosed spaces to better organize stuff when the flip-up gets flipped).

Also, it's hard to see, but you essentially get a captains chair that moves independently for the driver and the passenger/ middle seat move together. It's a 33/66 front split essentially, which makes sense.

I too like the idea of enclosed spaces for the "flip up". My OCD hates to scatter change and other stuff all over the cab....

Yes

I have owned both. My dogs preferred the bench seating (although driving for 3+ hours with a dog head in your lap was a bit annoying). I don't think any of my current vehicles have benches. The last vehicle I got with a bench I got the bench for a different reason - and never used it for that, so I did not realize the cost in my dog's comfort. With the bench, I occasionally used a kennel in the passenger seat to prevent the dog head issue (but that was a single cab truck).

Another problem with the captain's chairs and dogs - is the dogs think the hole in the center is an invitation to join the front seat party. I ended up having to put a net in my Jeep to keep them from joining me up front.
---
Another slight nod to the bench - if traveling, I can keep luggage in the back seat and still sleep on the front seat. Only did that once though - as the cap was generally much better for sleeping. Don't want to even guess the huge number of days I slept in the cap when on hunting and kayaking trips. The kayak trips were virtually every other weekend for 6 months out of the year for several years. So hundreds of nights is probably accurate. That said, hoping the Traveler will have enough room (removed the back seats, slide and fold the front seats forward - just enough room) to set up a sleeping platform in the back so I can sleep in AC. My Jeep LJ has enough room, so crossing fingers on the Traveler that it has a decent ability to fold down the rear seats. I can still see sleeping in my vehicle 20+ nights a year on trips.

Anyway 40/60 split on the bench (or 1/3) is a good compromise as well.

I too would like the utility of the bench so long as there is a fold down console. I also hope for enough length to get my 6’2 height sleeping in the back without having to contort my body like a yogi

Reading about your dogs made me think of this video I saw the other day.

I've seen a lot of discussion about the bench seat, but not much about the Regular Cabin. Is everyone leaning that way?
I like the idea of 3 across in the front row but I would prefer 3 bucket seats. Fold down arm rests would be a bonus.

I would really have to see the completed version of the bench seat. but at the moment I'm a going 2 bucket seat and bridge center console.

Bench only for me, no interest in buckets.

Or heating, cooling, massaging, bidet's, blue tooth.. No leather or cloth either, perfectly happy with vinyl.

I just need something to sit on.
