Googled Cybertrucks for sale a couple days ago. While there will always be specific vehicles that sell low and motivated sellers that want a vehicle gone yesterday - most are still asking close to $80k. The used market is mostly Founders Editions. Sure they have taken a hit from the new price, but since Founders Editions had $20k + of options, they are still selling for basically what a base Cybertruck can be ordered for.

While the goal of the post was probably to vent hate over the Cybertruck, the more important thing for the Scout community is that used Cybertrucks could be cheaper (significantly cheaper) than new Scouts in 2 years. I can easily see Scout loosing sales if they miss their price point.

Honestly, I think the biggest issue with the Cybertruck is people thinking it is a truck. To me it is closer to a damn wide 2 row minivan with a bed. As a minivan owner, I can see the utility in a 2 row minivan with a bed. I am not interested enough in a new Cybertruck to test drive one at this point in time - but I bet I would enjoy driving it. I bet it would have high utility for me. At least it has a 6.5' bed... But I really will not consider one until more of the future of the Traveler is revealed - prices, published test ranges, delivery date expectations, etc... If those fail in some unforeseen ways, I might actively start looking at the used Cybertruck market - there really is no other current EV's I am considering other than the Scout. Hell, for $35k (what the video predicted) I might possibly consider getting one as a second EV even if the Scout hits all my dream points.

A secondary issue is what is the actual marginal production cost of Cybertrucks to Tesla. The R&D is money spent - it is gone. But if Tesla could bring the price down (they are very efficient with their manufacturing process) - it could start a new demand for the Cybertruck. A 50k 4wd full range Cybertruck would sell a hell of a lot better than a 100k one. That said, Tesla probably makes more money selling 1 at $100k than it would selling 5 or even maybe 10 at $50k. They could easily maintain low production volume and maximize profits for a few more years. As far as I know, they still are managing to make and sell a few Model X's.

Could be an interesting thread - what might be alternatives be if timing or something else doesn't work out for someone?

I don't think Cybertruck is much of an alternative to Terra, certainly not Traveler. I'll admit I find them amusing to spot on the road, but glad to not be seen in one. Don't see much cross-shopping there.

My only alternative in mind for now to Traveler is Cadillac Lyriq - another larger 2-row w/ physical switchgear and reasonable screen real estate. Lyriq is actually a better fit for my use case vs. BoF, but its roofline is a bit low and I'm all in for retro-modern design. Updated Lyriq due ~MY27-28, we'll see how it lands.

I’m not real worried about it. The CT is polarizing and carries a reputation with it that I suspect most Scout fans don’t want to be a part of. Or maybe I’m just projecting my own feelings

I’ve been thinking about this. The Scout is it for me. There’s nothing else on the market currently I would buy.

If for some crazy reason the Scout was not close to the concept (and I don’t see that happening) I would put in a reservation for a R3X.

Rivian is another example of a more applicable use case for me vs. BoF. But touchscreen interior is a nonstarter and Rivian lacks a larger two row - i.e. R1.5S.

Good point about the lack of buttons and all screens. I really think if the Scout BEVs get delay or paused for any reason I’d just hold off. I have a hybrid now and could live with Scout EREV but I’d be disappointed in SM if suddenly they slowed BEV because of market. The took the hits on the chin for nearly 2 years when everyone was complaining about no ICE and I get the EREV but if they suddenly back pedaled I’d be a bit disappointed in them with their business stance. I think these discussions bother me because I haven’t heard Rivian say they are converting to EREV’s so it is possible to commit to making BEV and standing behind the business plan. Never thought 3 years ago I’d be supporting the BEV cause but the forum and folks like @SpaceEVDriver have converted me and I don’t really want to have gasoline engine-at least not in a Scout

Cybertruck doesn't compete with Scout (in any meaningful way) for four reasons.

1. Completely different ethos. Scout is a modern EV with classic looks, traditional UX, and semi-blue collar vibe of Carhartt clothing. Pretty much the opposite of what Cybertruck is going for, hard to imagine someone cross shopping that.
2. What you said in that second paragraph. Someone wanting a real pickup truck will skip it so it's not a Terra competitor, it's not a normal SUV either so it won't really compete against Traveler, you call it a minivan but honestly it's just sitting out there as it's own thing which IMO is more of a statement piece than anything else. Think modern Hummer H2 but with fewer customers.
3. For the few (if any) shoppers that can get over the previous two objections and do end up cross shopping Cybertruck, now you're left with all the many reasons Cybertruck has been a sales flop in the first place :gestures broadly at everything:.
4. For the 1 person who gets over the previous 3 objections and buys a Cybertruck because it's now $20K less than a Scout, I'd argue they weren't a Scout customer to begin with.

IMO used Rivians will be a solid competitor to new Scouts but that's not a new revelation. New cars are constantly competing against used cars with higher original MSRPs.
