Front Bench Seat Safety

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.
Hello and Welcome!

Safety is at the top of Scout's priority list and I have no doubt they will meet or even exceed current safety standards. If fact, they may be going as far as help rewriting them for the bench seat "comeback tour" lol

Regarding your question I would say there will most likely be both a knee bolster and dash air bag. I'm sure we will get plenty of information later on as production continues.

Hi Everyone. I was wondering where the air bag will be if you have a front bench seat? It appears the console and associated switches will be directly in front of a passenger sitting in the middle part of the seat. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to the community. I’m sure we will see where they are when we get to see the production models. For example, the concepts are missing some of the head rests, etc. welcome again!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting your thought. As these are still the original prototypes I’m sure they have worked them in and once they start testing I’m sure they’ll have it nailed down very quickly to meet all the safety standards and requirements

One thing about airbag technology that has improved over the years is that it is now possible to control the final shape of the airbag. Manufacturers can now have them formed into things like "curtains."
I don't know if Scout Motors will do it, but it's possible to have the airbag in front of the right passenger seat form into a curtain that protects both he right and the middle passengers.

Hmm, good question. Now I’m wondering, too.

I would’ve thought that you’d have to provide an airbag for each passenger, but Google tells me that there’s not a federal requirement to provide a front bench seat airbag… I can’t imagine that it’s absolutely out of the question so much as nobody has thought of a way to do it that makes fiscal sense.

I guess when trucks with bench seats get tested, there’s no crash test dummy in the bench seat used in order to get whatever safety rating you need to get to make it worthwhile. 🤔 Someone who knows better, please correct me. If I had a bench seat and was going to actually drive with someone in it knowing that they could go through the windshield, I’d want to be able to tell them that they better have signed up to be an organ donor.

Edit: oh hey, this question was answered! It sounds like it will have an airbag:

Most fascinating one to me was (Hondas-I think) with the catchers mitt style. Advancements in airbags are very cool

some day they will be small enough to fit in a 2-inch pipe roll cage. Then we will have cool cars again.
It probably could be done, but it would cost a crazy amount of money to develop.

The only reason I know anything about airbags is because they’re a fine example of sensors and actuators in your everyday life, and it was a good contextual example of what I could say people researched how to improve at my old job. 😅
