The Tax Man Cometh?

  • From all of us at Scout Motors, welcome to the Scout Community! We created this community to provide Scout vehicle owners, enthusiasts, and curiosity seekers with a place to engage in discussion, suggestions, stories, and connections. Supportive communities are sometimes hard to find, but we're determined to turn this into one.

Additionally, Scout Motors wants to hear your feedback and speak directly to the rabid community of owners as unique as America. We'll use the Scout Community to deliver news and information on events and launch updates directly to the group. Although the start of production is anticipated in 2026, many new developments and milestones will occur in the interim. We plan to share them with you on this site and look for your feedback and suggestions.

How will the Scout Community be run? Think of it this way: this place is your favorite local hangout. We want you to enjoy the atmosphere, talk to people who share similar interests, request and receive advice, and generally have an enjoyable time. The Scout Community should be a highlight of your day. We want you to tell stories, share photos, spread your knowledge, and tell us how Scout can deliver great products and experiences. Along the way, Scout Motors will share our journey to production with you.

Scout is all about respect. We respect our heritage. We respect the land and outdoors. We respect each other. Every person should feel safe, included, and welcomed in the Scout Community. Being kind and courteous to the other forum members is non-negotiable. Friendly debates are welcomed and often produce great outcomes, but we don't want things to get too rowdy. Please take a moment to consider what you post, especially if you think it may insult others. We'll do our best to encourage friendly discourse and to keep the discussions flowing.

So, welcome to the Scout Community! We encourage you to check back regularly as we plan to engage our members, share teasers, and participate in discussions. The world needs Scouts™. Let's get going.

    We are Scout Motors.

We all knew the tax man would eventually figure out a way to rake in the dough on EVs...
I just didn't think it would be so soon.

I wish this vehicle and demographic would get a punitive tax...

I just saw a scishow video on the connection between air pollution and Parkinson’s disease. This stuff has real consequences in our lives.

Car exhaust fumes contain certain poisonous chemicals, including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, formaldehyde, benzene and soot, all of which can be harmful to the human body if consistently inhaled in quantities. I am not surprised they are still finding some of these long term effects.

California proposed this before the current administration, and CA is far from Trump country.

Also, CA has stringent emissions testing and some people in CA still roll coal.

This isn’t about left or right, it’s about the oil industry as mentioned before, and the governments reliance on tax dollars they can spend.

Look at CA. Highest $/gallon taxes, sells the second most fuel per day (33m gallons/day) in the US, and our roads are in horrible shape. Why? Because the CA government spends the money elsewhere, not because there isn’t enough money.

The average fuel tax in CA is right around $0.60 not including sales tax or federal excise tax.

    33,000,000 * .6 = $19,800,000 per day

    19800000 * 365 = $7,227,000,000 per year

Yes, 7.2B in fuel taxes and this state can’t fix the roads. Ask yourself why is that, because you can’t blame the current administration for what CA is doing here.

Grift and misappropriation are not exclusive to one party.

I've already been paying this for my state for years.. I am hoping the new law doesn't mean I will pay 250 plus 200 for my state...

Well let's play with some funny numbers. My truck gets 14mpg. Assuming 10k miles per year, that is a tad over 700 gallons a year. Federal diesel tax is .244 per gallon. So my trucks federal diesel tax is $171 a year, with a State tax of $140. Now if I up that to to 15k miles - then my federal tax is $261. So we can say with my truck, break even is about 15k miles/year,

That said, it does not calculate the list of taxes I already pay on electricity... But electricity taxes don't pay for roads. Honestly, it could be more annoying. Heavy vehicle and trailer taxes are based on milrage - at least we will not be transmitting our mileage data to the goverment, yet... States were getting that with annual inspections, but I don't think the Fed's were.

What about your registration and license tax. How much is that per year?

If you don’t think the federal government can access your vehicles digital mileage and GPS information on new model vehicles and EVs, you’ve not been paying attention.
